Right, just to add to the shakiness of using a non VR lens , I bought a Kenko 1.4 tele today (ordered through DWI).

So now the wait... wait... wait...

Also, I have decided to use the tripod with the lens in the first instance, only taking off tripod for more difficult shots. If this proves to be a winner ill look at a monopod.

Here's a recommendation to fix the tripod head issue:

Better collar and foot: - LC-A10 Package: Collar and foot package - Kit Configuration Page
Better Ball Head and plate: - BH-40 LR: Mid-sized ballhead with LR - Kit Configuration Page

Also have a look at Kirk or Markin.

Christmas is upon us ... I treated myself to the last of the Trinity - Nikkor AF-S 14-24mm f2.8.
And with that, a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all

Join the club On an FX sensor that 14-24 is brilliant.

How do you find the LensCoat? I've considered getting these but I'm worried about dust getting underneath them.

Yes, I noticed he has the digital camo pattern. They do come in other patterns as well as plain black.

The idea of camo ... to be discreet and hidden ... fails miserably in this case. These digicam lenscoats attract far more attention than I bargained for, and more than naked gear.
Don't have a problem with dust so far, and the extra bit of protection against knocks and bumps gives me some reassurance, whether real or imagined.
