Lost or had a camera stolen?

This topic was brought up on the Overlander forum Overlander 4WD :: View topic - An interesting read on the power of the Internet & exif and I thought I'd mention it over here. If you've ever had a camera stolen you know the chances of recovering it are slim.

Well, maybe not so with digitals.

Have a read of this thread http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum...'t=1826005 on how a Whirlpool forum member found his camera using this website Stolen Camera Finder - find your photos, find your camera and the EXIF data

Tried entering both my Pentax cameras, it couldn't find any pics/info - I have posted plenty of pictures over the last few years.
Suggests Pentax are one of the brands that either doesn't post the serial number with the exif, or he hasn't been able to 'decode' that part of the exif yet.

I also tried both my Pentax cameras K100D and *istD and both failed with no EXIF data found. I know the EXIF exists as I can see it in irFanview and Picasa. I sent a message to Matt. Both cameras are listed on the supported camera page.

    Thanks for that Ron.

I had all my gear stolen in May. I put in the s/n and sure enough it found an image....one of mine on Flickr. That's as far as I'm going to look as I've had all my gear sine replaced by insurance.

    Cheers.

Why not follow it up and report it to the police in a manner similar to that in the Whirlpool thread?

It doesn't matter that you've had the gear replaced, the person has stolen property.

EXIF is a very fickle standard. Not all camera manufacturers strictly adhere to it and even between models it can vary as to how it is stored and retrieved. As a consequence not all EXIF may upload with the image or it may even be striped off. Also not all editing software or techniques will keep the EXIF intact.
