I am thinking the Tamron 18-270 represents a good balance of value and performance, so this might be the go. Reviews of it are not too bad and I think would at worst get Sarah up and running until she knows what she does and does not want from her lenses.

What else would i need to get? Bag, SD card, filters????

Make sure the lens has the image stabliser function with that sort of zoom power! I think it's called "VC".

My main lens is the Tamron 17-55 f2.8 ... it's a great value lens. My 50-250mm lens spends most of it's time in the bag! The only other lens in my kit is a Canon 50mm f1.8 ... it's only a cheapy but takes a great pic!

Get a CPL filter (polarising) and a cheap UV filter to go on the outside for protection. The CPL will help with colours.

Another good general purpose good quality, as opposed to kit, Nikon zoom lens is the AF_S Nikkor DX 18-70mm 1:3.5-4.5 G ED. Not a long zoom for wildlife etc but a good general purpose 'short' zoom.
I have one of these on my D70 as its standard lens. It's smaller and lighter than the 18-200mm and a lot cheaper. Doesn't have VR but at 70mm max doesn't really need it.
They are available on ebay for under $200 second hand.

Nikon D90 and Tamron 18-270 ordered. Should arrive this week. The best thing was Sarah started talking about how she wanted to get back into photography without knowing I was buying her a camera. Major brownie points .

We have recently made a big decision which will see us travelling a lot more, and the camera will come in very handy.
