Nikon 105mm VR Macro lens

I have the 105 2.8 Af and use often with my D700 and it is a very sharp lens indeed. I find that I tend to use my 24-70 2.8 more often than my rest of the lens arsenal. I have been doing weddings for many years and the 105 is a fantastic portrait lens without being in "your face". When off-roading I get my son to take photos and he prefers the 80-200, gives him the flexibility to stand at a good distance without distorting the vehicle shots and get good compression on landscape photos.

The 105 is rather specialty lens and I would recommend to save your money and get the new nikon 60mm macro (doesn't give you 1:1) and it is close to standard focal length which can be very useful for many applications.

I bought my 105 VR second hand from a wedding photographer that was switching from Nikon to Canon, picked it up along with a 20-200 VRII at a price that was simply too good to miss out on.

You will love it, amazing lens, not only for macros. It's actually very versatile.

But you are right.... lots of glass in there - it's heavy!

Hahahahah I would except I never used a paint brush to paint! :p I painted a picture using peices of cardboard and something tells me macros of peices of card simply isn't that exciting lol

Well I had a quick play:eek:

couple of things I have noticed straight off the bat.....baring in mind I have never had a macro lens before..

I was shocked at the really narrow field of view when up close..like its super narrow you have a really small section in the middle the rest is blur even if your on like F13...

the autofocus well mmmmm looks like I will need to get my eyes sorted and use manual a bit more the slightest movement and I mean the slightest throws everything totally out of focus...and then the lens will hunt in and out looking for something to focus on...

this is my first fixed focal length lens thats going to take a bit of getting used to:D....

I think this lens will make me learn how to use more functions on my camera and it will teach me a fair bit as its not as simple as putting it on and using it which is a good thing for me:).

Im going to have a look at some of the photos I took quickly I will be really surprised if any of them are in focus:D thats not the lens fault by any means

Are you using a tripod and extension on the shutter?
I would be hopeless without a tripod.
