Back when the aussie paso was worth more than 3c US.... I jumped on one of B & H Photos daily deals.
I got a Manfrotto MT294C3 with an 802RC2 head delivered to Aus for a bit under A$250... sells here somewhere around A$400+.
It's not as flexible for funny angles as my 190XPROB but it's very stable and so much lighter when I've got a decent walk. I changed the head to a ballhead as I just prefer them.
Agreed. I bought a Gitzo carbon 4pc traveller when I broke a Slik -I think it was about 6 years ago (reversed over bag - was a bad bad day that day) Use an arca p series ball head. Mostly for the MF and 4x5. Occasionally with the 35mm and a big tele, but not often. The arca head will support 20kg, and some big tele's will easily make half of this figure.
Then about 2 years ago - maybe 3, I bought a knock-off "giottos" carbon fibre tripod in SG, duty free, as I'd forgotten to pack my tripod - as good fortune would have it.
I use it on the dslr / 35mm and smaller tele's or when I take a wide night shot for giggles. It's actually light - very light and was dirt cheap. strong and an obvious knock-off of the gitzo, with the added advantage of one-leg transformation into a mono-pod. it was about 200SG. Bargain.
Haven't seen another like it since. beats the hell ouf of the price of a gitzo, but it is certainly not the same quality. It's more than good enough though.
I have a Manfrotto carbon tripod and it is excellent. i take it to the beach and get on the water with it and have performed very good for the last 7 years.
They are light steady and strong.
I run a Feisol tripod grabbed it from B&H. Great build quality better than my previous Gitzo, i do a lot of timelapse so i needed stability but also lightness so i can easily carry it onto a plane.
As for the head I'm running a Really Right Stuff head and shes a beauty.
i'd love an old heavy unit to keep on my back verandah and to take up the block..
been looking for something serviceable but under the $150 mark but even second hand they go for stupid money
way too much money involved in this camera stuff, i think i might have to go back to fishing or my missus will slit my throat...
Mix both pleasures!
I see a lot of sunrises when I go fishing. Most of the time I don't have a camera on me though, just the veritable iphone.
This was saturday morning:

Given I usually hike an hour or more into a few of my regular fishing spots, taking the RZ67 is simply not an option due to the stupendous weight.
It's bad enough carting all the fishing gear!
i fully intend too!
but i wont be walking that far on these hips.....
For Australia Day, B&H had free shipping to Oz on sales over $149.
I can't get up early enough to take morning pix and as I have no interest in fishing, that won't tempt me either.
