    Mirrorless...

I need a half decent Digicam for my writing, I've been told the smart phone is a no no (all my current cameras are film Mirrorless...) and decided something more compact for travel would be ideal.

I was leaning toward a Sony @60/63/6500, partially weather sealed, amazing tech but am now seriously looking at the Fujifilm X-T20 packaged with their excellent 18-55mm f2.8-4 lens.

    It isn't weather sealed but...

The top deck layout is like using my old Spotmatic or LX, it saves scrolling through menus, I can just set and shoot and it has most features of the big brother XT-2 with Fuji's dedicated small mount lens system.

Both are more than I really wanted to spend, I wanted to keep the $ under $1k as I want to go OS in a few months, but they look really good.

The other option is to lose some megapixels and go Olympus OMD.

Full frame would be nice but I just don't need it, (read, I can't afford what I'd like!!Mirrorless...)
If I want to go high res I'll trot out the old Mamiya 120. Mirrorless...

I haven't looked at Lumix yet.

    Thoughts/suggestions?

My son recently bought a Sony A6000... very happy with it.

Initially he wanted the A6500 for the weather sealing and in body stabilisation... but his budget didnt stretch that far and the deals around meant he got the 6000 for close to a 1/3 of what the 6500 was going to cost him and as a student , that was the clincher.

    Seems to take great images.

I bought an Olympus OMD MK1 to move up from a Canon compact digital.
This was to get more functionality, to enable me to take star trails and better night photography.
That camera was stolen in Copenhagen the travel insurance paid up and I bought the same camera again in the MK 2 version.
I base my decision on price mainly the camera came with two lenses as a kit a 14 to 42 and a 40 to 150.
The aperture setting is a bit high, the lowest I can get is 3.5, that's fine for me at this stage. I did look at getting a f1.4 but the price is very expensive in my opinion. The m-zuiko lenses are expensive.
I will have to save up and see how good I become at taking night time scenes before I make that decision.
I looked at others when I initially made the purchase but their were not that many mirrorless around at the time.
i'm pretty sure that price and the additional lense was what swung the deal.
I have been happy with the purchase. I have not been bothered by the 4/3 format.
I can put this one in my pocket and it has everything I need including a flash.
    The weight is negligible.

    Hi,
A good little camera. I now have the 60 mm f 2.8 macro to play with.
    Very happy so far.
    Cheers

It's hard to offer advise when you don't know what type of photography is the goal, but if I think I have an accurate idea of what you probably need to take photos of, I reckon a Sony RX100 of some variety would be ideal.
Even tho it's a fixed lens compact, it's large sensor(larger than the m4/3 sensor that Panasonic and Olympus uses). And it is a Sony sensor so it's about as good as you'll get.
Problem is they're so damned expensive for what they appear to be.
Makes no sense why Sony kept iterating/updating them (ie. I, II, III, IV and V models) whilst the old model was still being sold, and the oldest model could still be in stock in some places!!
So the newest model is approx mid thousand price range, and the oldest model could be in the $500-ish price range.
I've seen the III model for sale for under $1K(good value for money)

Does it have to be new? You could easily pickup a D600/610 and a lens for well under $1K from the usual suspect online market places.
Canon's 6D is also a decent second hand option to look into. Dunno much about Canon pricing and model range tho, I'm more of a Nikon user.

For my personal favourite value for money camera kit tho I is the Nikon D5500, about as good as you can get from anything else(if you can find one now).
Note that I specified value for money and not best camera product.

Not too long ago I got one with an 18-140 kit lens .. not that I needed any more camera gear! .. for under $600! Refurb deal off ebay.
They had the 18-55 lens deal too for about $50 less, but the one thing I don't need is additional clutter that serves no purpose at all.
I actually wanted a camera body alone (none available decent price) and for the cost I thought the 18-140 lens could come in handy at some point.
Got it for daughter if she ever wanted to use it!

You say your current cameras are film, what brand/models .. what lenses?
The point being, if they're <brand X>, and lenses are still useful, why change brand? Just go with a semi decent body to suit the lenses you currently have(if possible).

Thanks for taking the time to write that up.

The reason I need to get something new is that I need high res photos of product more than anything for web magazine publishing.

A fixed lens compact would probably be good enough, and I also considered a newer full frame 2nd hand body so I could use my old Pentax primes, but....

I used to be a mad keen photographer when i was younger, lugging around a big bag with a couple of bodies and lots of lenses.
And then I got sick of that as I spent too much time faffing about with gear and not actually experiencing what I was doing/seeing.

I've just been using the smart phone for several years when traveling, but they are limited, the AF drives me nuts, and the ability to adjust exposure is really limited, the distortion from the tiny lens, the lack of speed of the lens and the relatively low resolution all goes against it.

The 4/3 size sensor seems ok for a relatively small package, something that will stash in a day pack or Carmel back when walking.

One smallish body, one, maybe two smallish zooms and I think some nice travel/record shots might eventuate

An update, bought a Fuji X-T20 a week after the last post and have added a small 27mm pancake prime to the bag too.
Nice and compact and a far better camera/lens combo than I am photographer.

Ive had Nikon , Minolta , Pentax, Olympus OM 1 2 10 Film cameras & loved the Olympus most of All, then played with Pentax Digital for a while before settling on Olympus 4/3 mirrorless , Loved my OMD EM5 so much that I bought a second , One I keep a zoom lens on & the other a 17mm Zuiko or 18mm Panasonic prime , I can just slip it into my pocket , Have all the gear but only ever seem to take the one I can fit in my pocket.

Taken 50,000+ images with one , most with the intervalometer & hasn't missed a beat , shutter life is supposed to be 20-30,000 , I dropped it on a rock & cracked the TFT viewer glass but still fully functional. Great bit of kit. Dont miss the pixels,
