I am a photographer it's all personal preference as well. Stick with the main brands, Canon, Nikon, Sony and Fuji, you will have a fantastic camera no matter which one.
I personally prefer my DSLRs over mirrorless, but mirrorless are lighter much easier to carry. But they are expensive, and lenses are expensive as generally the dslr range don't fit. Fuji and Sony have been running them for several years now so you'd even find a second hand one at a decent price.
Mobile phones are fabulous but they will never be the same quality as proper cameras and optical lenses. Working with both, the data just isn't there in phones and zoom isn't so good, and distortion. They have replaced point and shoot though quality wise.
For what you are looking for, Canon Powershot range might suffice. It's like a half way point between phone and dslr/mirrorless. They have good optical zoom (huge quality increase over digital zoom) and are light and easy to carry around. No multiple lenses required.

Lots of entry level dslr you can just pop a zoom lens on though and it would do a lot of things. Mirrorless you could also do this method. I run canon brand and love them.
As for gopro. I've got hero8 and it's awesome. Think newest model is hero9. So any you go will be great. They also have a gopro that is a 360 camera. Those are really cool!

    Hi,
The best camera is the one you have with you.
So consider weight and size when planning. I have often got great photos that were only captured because the camera was accessible and fitted in a pouch on my belt.
    Cheers

    Great post and good advice.

One thing though, nearly all the older DLSR Canon lenses work on their new Mirrorless range, with an adapter and no decrease in picture quality, auto focus or tracking ability compared with using them on the DSLR range. This includes all the L series lenses.

Canon have also stopped making any more DSLR models.

Some people do like to see what they are actually photographing, not a digital image.
We have been looking at Mirrorless lately, although i do like the DSLR we have,ATM,but the Mirrorless is way ahead in many ways, and around half the weight.Which is important when carrying around prime lenses which are also very heavy.

Yes, adapter is a much cheaper option than changing lenses
Im a little concerned with camera brand decisions to cease dslr flagship cameras as the range of what is available for what someone needs. I'm sure there will end up being a range of mirrorless options to cover amateur to pro and a range that covers many different needs like we see in the dslr range. Here's hoping anyway! I've got 5dmk3 and 1dx. Heavy pieces of kit Advice Please! I use on a tripod or an adapter on my powerchair. So lightness of mirrorless will definitely be welcome as long as quality same or better Advice Please!

I loved our 5DMk3,it was an absolute cracker.Unfortunately it got drowned
With the insurance money,we added, and bought the 1DXMk2,its also a cracker but,as you said very heavy. But better for BIF,birds in flight.

We will sell the 1DX shortly and replace it with a Cannon R3,around 2/3 of the weight of the 1DX,with many more features, similar or slightly better quality. The R5 is half the weight of the 1DX,but doesnt suit our needs as much as the R3.

Still waiting to win lotto, then i can get a 600mm

Yes,there is a concern about DSLR being dropped, one of my brothers does digital printing, and he wont change, has tested the mirrorless, but doesnt like them.He uses top of the range Nikon and Fuji gear.

Anyway,it would be good to see some of your pics, maybe in the camera corner area?

    GoPro Hero9 met all expectations.

just thinking about this thread, I must say though, that I like the post about “best camera is the one that you have with you…” the quality and reliability available now is so good.
we’re up at our daughters farm, west of Dubbo for Easter. The sunset this evening was spectacular. I grabbed a few pics with the iPhone 11 from my front pocket. I’m a very happy Chappy. “ enough said..”

    Given the parameters talked about--
how fast an SD card do I need?
    also how big?
given a 512gb card is the price of the camera...
