Thread: Roof top tents

I purchased mine on ebay for $1500.00. It's a Gordigear tent, which looks to be a chinese copy of a more expensive brand It's very heavy canvas and the side annexe is actually part of the tent. Each window has an awning over it which is very useful, it seems well put together and the few times I've used it there have been no problems. If I had to niggle, it would be that the ladder rungs are uncomfortable to climb barefoot !!

I just purchased a tent from the net for just under $1500, and it includes ,,

Roftop tent, with extended top cover,
Weather skirt, (for under the entry end of the tent, leading into the rear of the car)
Manual awning, 2.5m wide x 2.1 deep,
Mosquito net (for awning)
Ladder extension.

Now this is a knock-off Chinese tent, but it looks comparable to the ARB/other brand tents etc, seems to be strong and well put together.
I guess we will see just how good it really is when we start to use it. But I think, for the saving I made over a "known" brand, I can afford a repair here and there if need be. But its all about how you look after things in the long run.
One of the features I really like about this tent is the fact it has windows on all sides, with screens, for full ventilation.

Just started the waiting game myself. Have put an order in for a 2.4m Hannibal Roof Top Tent. It's a big tent but should suit us nicely.

I have started making enquiries about a chinese made tent called cg-rt12. It fits to the top of a trailer but is more like a very large rooftop tent.

Well, I finally brought (only paid for and still havn't received it) a tent after many hours of research and got it down to a few some being top end brands, ARB, KK-MYTUBE, SHIPP SHAPE, EZI AWN, another crowd in Hervey bay, just to name a few.
And what a shock I've had! Spoke the company before purchasing whether they could meet a dead line that I was planning holidays in 4 weeks time and there was no problems. But that time has been and gone and after many e-mails finally got an answer with a poor excuse (typically salesman). Promised it would be despatched last week and a con note would be e-mailed and guess what, no e-mail! Would be the poorest service I've ever had, they didn't even give any updates after I ask them for a update. I don't mind the delay as long as I knew about it so I could change my plans. They say buy Australian but why if the service is so poor and to rub salt into my wounds, a mate brought the tent from H-BAY and received it in a couple of days. When it comes time to buy my camper trailer they will not be getting a look in!!!!!. In the right mind to sell it if I ever get it and buy another brand and have some money left over. Very unhappy.

so who was the supplier?

since we are after a tent big enough to accomodate a family I have narrowed the choice to:

• eezi awn 2.2 x 2.4 roof tent that folds to 2.2 x 1.2m; and

• hannibal 2.0 x 2.4 that folds to 2.0 x 1.2.

My wife is keen to go for as much room as possible -so eezi awn.

A couple of differences I have observed between the two:

• attachment to roof rack - hannibal I think bolts through the plywood base and eezi awn has a alloy rail mount design.
• hoods over the door and rear window - hannibal as sites built into the hoods so better for rain, eezi awn has no sides to the hood so better for breeze;
• cover - hannibal has a zip on cover that is permanently attached one side, eezi awn has a cord/strap set up that pulles the cover in under the base.

we make a final decision tomorrow. We are buying a awning also. The final package price will be an influence.

We are getting the Hannibal 2m tent. My wife wanted the biggest ( we were under the impression there was a 2.4m tent) Peter at Hannibal gave some good reasons why to go the smaller. It's still a big tent, two ladders and entrances but takes up less space. If you will be doing any touring the extra space will be very handy. You will still be pushing the legal limit for weight, but at least you can still put a jerry can or two up there. We will now be storing the weberQ and gas up top.

I have the rack and awning from Hannibal. They really are an awesome bit of kit.
On our tent Peter is going to be upgrading our mattress to the comfiest that will fit up top. Can't wait.
