Coleman Dual Fuel Lanterns

I bought a Coleman Northstar Ei dual fuel lantern off Ebay. Picked it up sunday after Castle Hill LR Expo. $35.00 ! ... included the red plastic carry case as well.

Pulled it down, and cleaned it up last night ... looks a little bent, but straightened up just nice. Presure tested for leaks under water ... all good. Cleaned up so well it looks like it's had hardly any use (probably been in storage for a while I reckon).

Fitted a mantle, pressurized it up, hit the button, it lit up and boy does it put out some light!!

Leaves the old LPG gas lamp for dead.

Any hints or tips on the care and feeding of these things ?

I've also recently purchased 2 x of the Coleman 533 duel fuel single burner stoves ex Ebay USA for $135AU posted ... same deal ... proper care, and feeding of these things, and any tips would be appreciated.

This is my first foray into these units (my LPG bottles are out of date, and the duel fuel stuff seems like a sensible choice in place of LPG).

Here's a tip to keep the mantle from fracturing over rough roads: Spray mantle with some hairspray, and it will hold together nicely (obviously once it is out and cold....

).

And run some proper Coleman fuel through it every so often to clean things out as unleaded will clog it up eventually.

How's that - two tips!

spudboy ... I've done the hair spray thing ... and no one around here carries the coleman fuel ... they say they can't get it! ??

Hi, you should be able to get Coleman fuel from any camping shop, it comes in a handy square(ish) tin, about 5L for $20 or so.

Just a note on burning petrol in your coleman:

Safety Note

Never use genuine petrol in a stove. The refinery adds a number of quite nasty things to it to make cars run better: these are not good for your health. Things like lead (brain damage), benzene (serious carcinogen) and other more esoteric things. The term 'petrol' is used here solely as a generic. Use fuels such as Shellite, Coleman Fuel and other similar fuels sold by stove manufacturers. Most gear shops can provide this cheaply.

The Coleman fuel has a lubricant in it (to lubricate the control valve) and should be available in any good camping shop as already stated. Shellite is available in Bunnings (and camping shops) and is the same product (petrol without all the additives) without the lubricant.
I used unleaded in a double burner stove and had to replace the valve assembly after a few years because it was gummed up. Stay with Shellite or the Coleman fuel and you shouldn't have any problems.

Shellite=drycleaning fluid=white spirits=lighter fluid burns cleanly in the lanterns. I had an aged Primus kerosene pressure lamp for years which got lost in a house move

Providing you keep sooty flames to a minimum, kerosene works very well...and it's relatively cheap. A mix 50/50 of white spirits and kero is even better

As above, all good advice, I have the small single burner stove, a twin burner stove and two lanterns. Good thing to do is drain the fuel if you are going to store them for more than a week, especially if using unleaded.

I have had the small stove for over 20 years and 0ne of the lanterns for about the same, no complaints great things
