The Tarptents look great.:)I used swags years ago,before they became trendy.;) They are a pita in wet weather,unless you erect a tarp over them and if you have 3 mates camping with you,they take up more room than a large canvas cabin tent. I hate swags.:)

Its funny that you are thinking about this. I,m in the same boat and am going to get one of these. Cost around $100 but ebay has them for $80 (ish) I think its a good compromise over the swag. I have swag as well that i use for work but its really bulky and I think the darche will be great for a weekend away. Mind you, I,ve never had a bad night in the swag.

I bought one of those single camp stretchers and put my swag onto that and I find it so much more comfortable then sleeping on the ground, especially in winter. I also put all my gear under the stretcher like boots ect so it's there in the morning. Mine is an old school swag I've had for 15 years or so, so no poles or fly nets to muck around with.

so you want to be a real aussie bloke and camp in a swag.
3 second tent, a couple of cheep 20 dollar bags from Kmart and a 10 dollar blowup to sleep on. add the blower 15 bucks and a jump start thing from cheep as chips, with a giggi socket and light and you can recharge it from the car.
plus a 19 dollar box from miter 10 ( Black green lid)
so 110+20+20 +10 +15+ 50 = a set up that stores well, is all weather, and you can get dressed in and its comfortable.
swags and tarp tents are okish until the weather goes bad. if the weather is off and kit gets wet it stays wet until you get home.

First step is to fully identify the properties that you want of the Swag/ Tent/ Tarp etc.
Quick to prepare?
Keep you dry in more than a lite shower?
Adaptable for use in all Seasons/ weather?
Used for hiking as wel as 4wding?
Swags are easy to prepare, can be modified easily for different temps (extra blanket or 3) and there is a romantic feel to rolling out the swag, BUT
they are no longer the cheap alternative, no good at keeping the bities out, not the best place when it buckets down (ask me about the time all the creepy crawlies realised I was drier than them for a while, so they came to join me!).
A dome swag has the benefits of a swag, with an insect barrier, roll down flap for when it's hot (for you for the first 2 years, that's all the time ; ))
The tent you linked and those like it minimise the amount of gear you own by being suitable to trekking/ tramping.
If just for 4wding, The stretcher tent is a great option to keep you off the ground away from the heat, mud and Joe Blakes (reptiles)

I have a swag (and insect repellant) and stretcher for 4wd, a Hootchie for ultralight trekking, 2X $70 special 6 person domes for the whole family and am budgeting for a pop up when the mob toughen up a bit and don't need a taj-mahootchie for a quick trip away ; )

My setup is a Down Under Brumby XL swag on top of a Roman XL stretcher. If it looks like rain the the swag will be pulled under the awning on the car. This setup worked well for my dad and I when we did our trip across the Nullarbor and back through the centre. Means we didn't have to share sleeping space and could set up as far away from each other as we liked.
If I have just a quick overnight fishing trip Ill just use the swag.
When the 101 is finished, Ill just roll the swag out in the back of that :D
Same here. Can't beat the camp stretcher if you ask me. In dry weather, I throw one of those self inflating mattresses on it and a doona - in wet weather, just throw the swag on it. I've got a fold out awning on the side of the Disco and just set up under that. All my gear simply goes in the car.Quote:
