cheap canvas tarp - are they any good?

    Hi all,

I'm looking at getting a new canvas tarp and come across this site selling canvas tarps.

    Canvas Tarps : Escapin Outdoors

The description sounds good and the price is much cheaper than other canvas tarps I've seen. Makes me wonder what the quality is like. Anyone seen/used these and able to advise on the quality?

    cheers

This place also sells cheap tarps - I have two of theirs http://www.dealsdirect.com.au/c/tools-auto/a-z/120/ (you need to scroll through all their pages to get the various sizes)

I have had them for about 4 years and use them as ground sheets - still waterproof but sunlight does bleach out the colour but does not impact how waterproof they are.

I took the plunge and bought the 9'x12'. The finishing on the eyelets could be better - some of the cutout bits are stuck under the eyelets. Apart from that its fine. I'm happy with it.

I had a much closer look yesterday and right in the middle there's a small section about 50mm x 20mm that is very thin - almost worn through. It certainly would not stop water leaking through and could possibly rip without to much effort. I'll be contacting the retailer tomorrow about it.

    Hi Frank,

They are happy to replace/refund if it is in an 'unused condition' which is fine as I haven't used it but as it's a manufacturing fault I really think they should replace it even if I had used it. I'm planning to return it in person on my way up to Sydney in a few weeks. Also thinking about getting the heavy duty PVC tarp instead of canvas.

    cheers

Wayne, can you ask them what the problem is and do all their canvas tarps have the same problem, not worth buying if manufacturers problem is common throughout the range, Regards Frank.

    Frank,

He said "It sounds like the loom did not knit the fabric properly. I am happy to exchange it if it is an unused condition."

I will ask him fore more details and get back to you but it probably won't be for a few weeks.

    Hi Frank,

He said he'd had a couple of other tarps with similar issues but it was not the norm.

I exchanged the canvas one and for a few dollars more I got the heavy duty pvc tarp. Whilst I haven't opened it, it looks quite tough. I actually had it with me at Bendethra but I forgot to show you.

    cheers
