So many people I see in camps have ridiculously huge campfires. I keep mine quite small and it's amazing how long you can keep a small fire going for with quite a small amount of wood.
Unless you have a large group, A large fire doesn't make a lot of difference to warmth as they get too hot so you just have to move back, with a small fire you just get closer, either way your back still gets cold. A big fire is also useless for cooking.
We call those little fires Boutique fires, love them, Small, discrete, and work fine.
Have to agree for some people the size of the fire relates directly to the thing hanging off the front of their head.
I may as well share as A fellow landy driver educated me. When it's getting cold and the back is getting a bit fresh, take a small shovel of coals out and pop them under your chair. It doesn't melt the nylon, but it sure warms ya behind and back. Wife loves it.
Hey Tank,
I go up and down Wadbilliga pretty often, and can very safely say not taking a chainsaw is very foolhardy. As is not taking one big enough..... Especially when Browns Mountain was closed, Tuross was flooded, and the tree was at the top of Conways Gap.
Not often you get a 200 km extra detour to end up 30 km from where you ceased proceeding.
Cheers,
Gumnut
Still no word from parks I guess they just don't give a flying frig
Feed bags of hard wood sewn up with bailing twine. About 30cm long and stacked in the bags OCD style so you a big heavy brick.
We use as much found firewood as possible though and take the bags for quality coals for cooking.
I'm a bit slack about gathering firewood tbh. When I pull up its time to get the chair table nibbles and a glass of something out of the Engel not a time for chores.
Stir them up. let them know you asked a question on ?, and it would be nice if they replied. Let them know their YOUR parks as well, not just theirs, and it's only fair you get a reply. Let them know, because they didn't reply you conclude they don't give a flying frig, so why should you.
