Wood and string is probably a good option. I have made up very simple boxes, lined with foam mattree material, or bubblewrap, and to date I have not had a breakage or spill. Same goes for pressure lamps.
I like to carry 3 of the old school kero lanterns with me for lighting around the camp - I have fuel lamps and battery leds, but for mine you can't beat the glow of a hurricane lamp.
My problem is storing/packing the things efficiently and safely given they are not the most user-friendly shape and they can spill. They usually stack in ungainly fashion in a bucket.
I'm assuming that I'm not the only one ever to look at them and think "there must be a better way"?
So. before I start fabricating something from wood and string, Has anyone already come up with a solution they are happy with and would be prepared to share?
cheers,
Luke

depending on the size you have.
90, 125 and 150mm poly pipe glue on the base caps, slide on the tops and done.

thanks for your replies guys. looks like i'll have to hit the shed on the weekend. I like the idea with the tubing, but the arms of the lamps are 18cm across, protruding outside the diameter of the globe. short rings could be good for locating the base inside a box though.
Amazing how thin on the ground good sturdy boxes in a variety of sizes are... I had hoped to just stumble over one that happened to fit the lamps just right. Where to find good boxes for camping purposes - ideas?
I also have made boxes from ply which are lined with closed cell foam. (impervious to oils etc) I rarely even break mantles in my pressure lamps.
