    Awnings Vs Strong Winds

I have just returned from a trip to Sharks Bay for 6 days and the wind was rather "Brisk" for 5 of the 6 days unfortunately.
The pop rivets that hold the awning together at the truck failed and I had to improvise and use tech screws to hold it together.
These rivets can be found on the aluminium extruding that the top legs come out of and they hold this extruding the awning cover and the extruding that attaches to the roofrack together.
They are pretty 'Flimsy" aluminium rivets and I will be replacing the tech screws with stainless bolts so that they won't fail again.
Next time you put your awning up have a good look at these rivets to make sure that they are in good order otherwise you may find that your entire annex will pull off the roofrack and blow away.

We just came back from a trip into The Gorge along the Clarence River in NSW - We got hit by a severe wild storm late at night on the Saturday night before New Years Eve. Because of the time it hit we couldn't see how bad it was going to be. I had 2 Kings Awning + a eBay awning on the Drivers side up at the time. The one on the drivers side had 2 awning walls attached as extra shade due to the heat. We didn't have time to do anything when it hit and it just absolutely smashed us. The eBay awning just got bent up and we were actually pinned between the awning and the Defender and was just been pelted by Hail and the gravelly sand from the river's edge being whipped up. Not sure of the wind speed but it was strong enough to move caravans and a larger Motorhome truck a foot in distance, so we reckon every bit of 100mph ripping down through the valley.

The damage in daylight was severe with some people injured and requiring hospital attention. For us, we got off lightly. My 1400mm Awning at the rear of the Defender was totally destroyed. The Drivers side totally destroyed. The Kings awning on the Passengers side and on the downside of the storm survived but was still damaged requiring some panel beating....

Got say, I love these Kings Awning for their price alone because if this was a Foxwing or something like that I would have been .

So, I'm up for 2x 2.5x2.5 awnings and a 1.4x2mtr rear awning...... Could have been much worse....

    Yes.
I don't think it matters who makes the awning, If they have pop rivets holding the extrusions together that attach to the roof rack then they are prone to failing and replacing the pop rivets or beefing them up with a few nuts and bolts is what I recommend.
These pop rivets are under a lot of strain when the awning is deployed AND even when the awning is rolled up and put away the corrugations and other stresses affect these as well.
I have NO intention of starting a Brand War about awnings, I am simply saying that these failing pop rivets that are used on the Majority of makes are problematic and am giving a "Heads Up" so that some preventative maintenance of drilling a few holes and fitting a few nuts and bolts can save you a heap of grief
