    Porta Potti

I was given an old 265 Porta Potti in great nick but no manual. I don't know the capacities of the tanks. How much in the flush tank and the holding tank. If anyone can help would be much appreciated.

Fill them up with water and pour it into a 20l bucket, You should be able to gauge the capacity of each tank that way.
Also as it is an old unit it wouldn't hurt to be flushed out anyway

I’ve never needed to know the capacity of mine...

Flush tank we just fill to the top...
The waste tank doe have an indicator but on your you can see/check through the flush hole.

All you need to know is empty it before it gets too full - easy to know when this happens. 👍

Fill the upper 'flushing' tank with water to a level which is below its filling cap when laid flat (to avoid leaks). Although there are additives available that can be put into this tank they are IMO totally unnecessary and a waste of time/money. The lower 'containment' tank needs to have a suitable chemical such as Thetford Aqua Chem added to approx. 2 litres of water to ensure 'hassle free' operation . You will know when it needs emptying as the level in the containment tank reaches the 'shut off' valve at the top. Emptying sooner rather than later is a good idea. Ensure that the rubber seals on the containment tank filler cap are in good condition.

On a more 'delicate' side, avoiding using the Porta Potti for 'number two's' if possible, it can make management a lot easier. In the real world this may not be possible. So placing a layer of toilet paper inside the bowl and across the outlet into the holding tank ie. several lengths of sheets laid say 60 degrees apart across the bowl outlet can not only facilitate the rapid egress of the bowl contents to the containment tank but leave no 'mess' in the bowl which would otherwise need to be cleaned up.

    Good advice.
Also, don't forget to empty it after a trip and leave it untouched for a year, as a friend of mine did, and then open the lid. Porta Potti

Also get the right pootickets and chemicals that are septic friendly as some dump sites are to septic systems.

Luckily Ian found the manual, otherwise I was going to guess a capacity of 265 litres which could've ended in disaster.
