Don't go to bed ****ed and get up for a leak and forget you are up on the roof.
Hi All,
I'm looking at buying a second hand roof top tent for my Puma. I have a Rhino full length Pioneer Rack I hope to be able to mount it on so when I take the tent off when not in use (or if I sell it) I don't need to make any mods. It's for my wife and I (no kids) so a mega awning isn't important but would be nice. Budget is on a case by case basis. We will potentially be camping in winter in Vic and Tassie but more occurrences in summer.
Any tips?

Yes one of the downfalls, also don't go through the Macdonalds drive through, some have low clearance.......
We have one,its great, and very warm in the cold weather, just got back from a long cold trip in NSW.
And super cool in summer.
I can also fit the foxwing on the rails as well, but we didn't use it much on the last trip.It didn't rain, and wasn't that sunny so didn't need it for shade.
Mine sits on Rhino roof rails, and its slim enough to lift up above the car,in the carport, when not in use.
We didn't want a van because it restricts where you can go,in fact on the last trip, almost every place we stayed, couldn't be accessed with even a small van in tow.The RTT gives you a lot more freedom.
Ours takes 10 seconds its up,60 seconds its down, with the bedding all ready to go.
Good luck with your choice, its the old story with price, you only get what you pay for.

We had this set up for a Simpson Desert trip. It worked well.

Make sure the floor is strong enough for the likely weight. I know someone who had to strengthen a floor after it cracked.
Think about what to do if the tent gets wet. Does it have a good fly? Will wet canvas land on the bed?
Consider the quality of canvas. Is it good enough?
Will the thing flap like crazy in a high wind?
Our one and only RTT was a secondhand Aussie Traveller full length type I.e. don’t fold in half. Yes it takes up all you roof rack space but we could easily keep a doona, four pillows, ladder and solar panels in it when packed up, the bonus was a much bigger under cover area and/or room. We swapped this between the defender and camper trailer. Now sold.
If I had to buy again I’d buy a hard shell with 270 degree self supporting awning.....although we are really liking our Expedition Centre Mulgo Poptop
I love my RTT,
Pros: - minimal setup time
- Doona, 4 pillows, electric blanket with underlay all ready to go
- no thinking required when packing car to go.. just need food and job done
Cons: - The Whole roof area is gone
- Fuel Drag
Sometimes I think would a Soft RTT be better as i get a bit of my roof back Or a Swag on a stretcher under an awning.
ps
Yes its a heater and no I don't normally have it in the RTT. I was experiementing with the windows down to see how well it would warm up...

What about max roof loading? The Defender owners handbook says:
A tent, roof rack, and me would exceed that. The MAXIMUM roof rack load is 150 kg.
For my L322, the handbook says:
Is the Defender also downrated for off-road use?The MAXIMUM load for approved roof rack systems is 100 kg for normal road
use and 50 kg off-road. The above weights include the mass of the roof rack system.
