    Sand spear pump thingy

wonder if any one can help here,i remember seeing something about these devices on a tv program a while ago where you put a shaft down in the sand (obviously at the beach) and got it down near the water level and pumped fresh water (details a little sketchy ) anyone know anything about these units,as going to the top end of fraser and would be better to have one of these units rather than lug heaps of containers of water for a weeks supply

they are great... glind sell one that goes down about 4 feet.

i have two home made ones down about 17' here at home to supply garden water.

most beaches have fairly fresh water close under the surface at some point along their length. most of the time it is somewhat brackish due to tanin content but still very usuable

1 thou screen is best for sand IMHO

i think a guy in se qld makes them, the new 4wd show on briz 31 featured them on the weekend, opps that right you probably don't get briz 31 hehehehehe

around $400 i think, you will need a good pump as well $100+ dollars

a mate of mine has brought the bottom bit which we use when we going camping to pump water from creeks for showers

would be tops for extended stays ont he beach

Sand Spear - Sand spear with jet tube is designed to extract fresh water out of sand. 1500mm long s/steel tube with jet pipe for easy access to the underground water table. A water pump with a minimum of 11 l/min is required to jet this into the water table (available seperately or it can be used directly with the Glind Original). Imagine unlimited water when beach camping, no more travelling to fill water containers and no extra drums to carry, this is a space saving, fuel saving must have for the serious camper. $385.00 - Order now

cheers thanks guys, was starting to think i may have been dreaming it up,but was fairly sure they exist, little exxy, but would be worth it in the long run(no pun intended)saving running all the way down to orchid beach for example to fill 25 litre drums every couple of days, multiply that by a few trips over the years and it would be worth its weight in water

Be carefull... they aren't permitted on Fraser Island... who knows why.. but there you go.

Can I use a water spear (that is, a device to pierce the ground to obtain water from underground)?
No, this interferes with a natural resource (which is an offence under the Nature Conservation Act) and QPWS cannot guarantee the quality of the water.

    Some boring facts ( ):

Fresh water is less dense than salt or brackish water and "floats" on top of saltwater forming a lense.

Perth extracts much of it's water from underground aquafers...shhhh don't tell the nature gestapo
