A 3 way caravan fridge is ok on mains, they suck on 12V and not much better on gas, I dont like the idea of having lpg in the vehicle unless its well vented or a gas leak detector fitted, think your better of with an Engel

They have their limitations but i have a finch 3 way that my dad bought at least 25+ years ago that still works on gas, i have also just been given a newer but almost identical chescold 3 way that is running on 240V in my laundry (close to the pool) that works great on lpg and 240V, i'm going to try the PC fan mod and see if it improves the 12V operation. So if you get one cheap go for it.
good thing about the 3 ways is no moving parts so they are pretty bulletproof if you look after them.
we have both a compressor type and a 3 way,...... will keep both, use the compressor if touring, 3 way on gas if we base camp.
I have 3 way found it best if you had it on mains first for a few days b4 trip. definately seems to perfer being still. Might try those fans soon and some insulation for travel as it does seem to struggle in the car would love an engel or waeco compressor fridge but can't justify the expense to the financial controller.
I have a 3way cheapy and if I follow the instructions and turn it upside down occassionally ( when not in use ) , and keep it shut and out of the sun, it will keep frozen stuff frozen for a week on gas easy.
The beers go on ice in an esky though :cool:

I've found my 3-way works fine for touring. On 12v it'll keep cold while driving in an airconditioned vehicle, but have to change over to gas as soon as we stop for the night. I've rigged mine up with a bayonet-type plug (what indoor gas heaters have) to make the gas connection easier. It's another story trying to keep cool during the day on 12v.
We have 3 all different,,,
1# 40 litre Engel that can be wound down to -25 if needed, it can stay at 0.2 for 4 days with my dual battery setup.:D
2# Electrolux fridge/freezer in the camper that will freeze milk and butter overnight with the thermostat set at 1/9.:D
3# A 3 way fridge that wouldn't even be any good as a mailbox..:(
