    Yoga type mats

Ive been looking at self inflating mattresses lately, and frankly, they are expensive! The cheaper one are rubbish, and middle of the range ones get good, but the price tags matches it.

My wife told me that one of the big shopping chains sells yoga mats for $7 ea, so we figure well buy them (we need 3) and see what they are like. Worse case scenario we wasted $21, best case scenario we save over $200.

Anyone else used these mats camping?

I've tried sleeping on the in the past and they were crap. They're just way too soft and offer no support or protection from all those little stones and sticks that you thought you cleared away before pitching your tent but somehow snuck back.

There's a reason the self inflating mattresses are so expensive, it's because they're actually very good. I have slept on them for weeks at a time & I reckon it's almost as comfortable as sleeping on my swag which has 60mm of medium and high density foam.

    Ditto what hoadie said.
I've had a 3/4 self inflating mat for years and do yoga regularly on a couple of different mats and I wouldn't really like to sleep for too long on a yoga mat (which do come in various thicknesses )

I think the yoga/exercise mats are just a bit of thin foam with a covering over them.

The good quality self inflating mattresses are worth the investment and will last many, many years if looked after.

Many people forget that they also have excellent thermal insulation which stops the cold seeping up. I reckon you'd need a conventional foam mattress twice as thick to get near the same comfort and insulation proprties.

We bought the touring model (thicker and longer ) Thermarests about 4 years ago, after using an air mattress for years, and they are great - if you wait till Ray's has a 26% off sale you can save a bit.

If you still think they are too dear, maybe look at the mattresses they use in a quality swags. ( e.g. a Burke and Wills ). They will be a bit bulkier, but will be high density foam. Camping shops ( eg Freedom ) might sell you the mattress only.

same yourself the $21 bucks and pay for the expensive ones straight up.... Yoga mats are rubbish to sleep on. In my hiking days I started using them and found them so useless it wasn't even worth carrying them.

In saying that though you may be well advised to use a full length yoga mat underneath a thermarest type mat. This is quite common and I ahve done it and it does help with the cold coming through a little.

Do you have room for the cot type beds? I find them the best but it comes down to space. I have not looked for a while but they were my pick out of camping type beds and they were cheaper then a good self inflating bed.

Thanks all. On the advice received here we are not going to spend the money on them. We shall save up for the self-inflating ones.

Speaking of which, are the spinefex brand OK as they are going for $70 at Anaconda.

    Cheers.

    Thread hikjack alert...

I've tried them in the shops and find that they rock lengthwise. Does this not cause problems as you move in the night? From the quick try in anaconda I don't think I'd relax enough to sleep as I'd be worried that it was going to collapse.

Or do you just get used to it?

    Cheers, Steve

I think your talking about the ones which have the 4 legs which plug in to each side so it sort of gives you 8 legs?

Anyway, without being able to better explain myself some of the frames on them are better then others and for me it was a matter of paying a bit more and getting a full alloy frame which was structualy far better then others I had seen. I have a single but I think if I used it more often it would be great to have a double.

Sorry, should have been clearer. I meant the $80-100 type stretchers, such as this one:

We got a DMH Australia single size self inflating matress for SWMBO. It is very good and comfortable. It is easier to roll it up with two persons but I can do it OK by myself. I am pretty sure we got it two years ago for around $100
