By my maths $2.50/ltr at BCF is cheaper....

I'm too lazy to go to another shop to buy shellite, I just use premium unleaded.

(Sorry just read the bit about not being able to find stock, too lazy to read the thread properly too)

It's interesting how there's a split between those who never use petrol, those who never use shellite, and those who use both. Being a used stove, I might run a few tanks of shellite in it, and then see how I go.

    Hi

    8 <--------

Safety Note: Never use genuine petrol in a stove. The refinery adds a number of quite nasty things to it to make cars run better: these are not good for your health. Things like lead (brain damage), benzene (serious carcinogen) and other more esoteric things. The term 'petrol' is used here solely as a generic. Use fuels such as Shellite, Coleman Fuel and other similar fuels sold by stove manufacturers. In addition, some of the additives gum up the stove and block the jet.

I have used petrol, with problems of carbonised gunk blocking the jet completely. Not any more, I'll stick with Shellite or Coleman Fuel thanks.

    Cheers

I have run my msr dragonfly on all the fuels listed except kerosene. You have to change the jet which can be messy. Also swapping fuels requires a cleanout otherwise they clog up. Apart from that the stove is great on all the fuels only with varying levels of stink and mess...

    I was using unleaded - a bit sooty .
Started on shellite , not as sooty and hotter .
Coleman fuel seems the best - clean and hot .
I'm not sure if its different ?

I have an old lantern , has 10 yr old petrol in it , coleman fuel seems to be breaking down the gumminess

Buy when on special .....yes i'm tight .

    Hi,
Shellite is often on sale in cheap jack type shops. It is not always there, keep a lookout for it.
Some sheltered workshops decant Shellite, Turps, Metho and Kerosene from drums to smaller 1 or 2 litre bottles for sale in these shops. Could be worth checking some in your area.

    Cheers

That stuff seems to be Diggers shellite.

And no, I don't want that much. I'd never use it.

We have both the colman (twin) and the MSR whisperlite international which I have had for 15 years and has never skipped a beat. The msr is only used for hiking and you just can't fault them. The colman is used for touring in the 110 as it can be left set up in the trailer and quick to put the billy on. We have been touring the last 4 months and have used the colman a minimum of X3 a day and it is bloody fantastic. Only thing was the bull dust got into the pump but back to new with a drop of oil. We average 1L per week also. Funny but shellite all up the east coast was $7 per 1L or 40 something for a 5L at bunnings yet in Seisia it's $5.95 for the same bottles (everything else is at lest double normal prices). So anyone thinking about them I would highly recommend either of the stoves.
Ps Ranga keep me posted on any decent shellite bargains 👍

Have relied on the metho trangia for nearly 40 years (same set).

Have the MSR, but rarely used these days. I think intended more for high altitude cooking where metho won't provide the btus. Used mostly diesel, but needed small amount of petrol around jet system to get diesel vapourising. MSR were good with some repairs required when well out of warranty. Easy to burn your food if not careful. Great all rounder.

Also now have a cute little wood burner, combustion aided by fan, and supplies enough power to charge mobiles and head torch. Anyone up for adding a bi-metal electricity generator to their Coleman?

I have a Coleman dual fuel two burner and have always used unleaded. Never missed a beat in about 15 years. We have used it for 9 months straight while travelling cooked almost every meal plus cuppas a few times a day. Only just changed the generator in the last few years. Pots do get black though. I bought some shellite the other day to give it a try. mainly just for interest as petrol works just fine.

When walking I used a trangia for years. I still have my original stove which I would guess is almost 30 years old. It still works fine.

The trangia was not up to melting snow for water. So I graduated to a msr Internationale. Prefer shellite for that but it often ran on kero when shellite was hard to find. lighting an msr is a bit of an art. Usually it involves a barely controlled explosion. .
