Thread: Beach Tent

Depending on what you want to spend a Black Wolf Turbo, OzTent or any good dome tent will handle gusting winds well but all of them need to be pegged down and have the guy ropes pegged out. We've used our Black Wolf in some fairly gusty conditions without problem in this manner.

Thanks for the input. I did like the look of the Southern Cross ultimate but as you said guy ropes are required, so I will have a look at a good dome type.

Why can't you use guide ropes on the southern cross? I have a Oztrail 9RV and it has loops for guide ropes if you want. Nice and easy to erect too and will take a good wind imho.

I've used a Southern Cross Ultimate for many years and never once have I had any trouble.

Nor have I ever used guy ropes. The tent has been pitched at Tantangara Dam and withstood storms there. Any members who know Tantangara will testify to the ferocity of the wind and storms in that area.

Don't know what the Southern Cross is like. So can't comment on it.

A tarp is your best friend is bad weather.
Get a decently made, heavy duty tarp and the tent is almost irrelevant.
For overnighters we have a small two man (2 pole) dome tent. Takes a couple of minutes to put up.
The airbed and nothing else fits inside, it either stays in the car or outside.
If wind is hooting, or it looks like rain, the tarp goes up.
Ideal for beach set up, you can even get away without using poles.
This is what we do for weekends and overnighters on the beach anyway.
5-10 min setup tops.
