I reckon a legnth of pvc pipe 100mm diameter with screw caps each end cut down the middle lengthwise with some hinges and catches, some alloy tube and a canvas tarp would be easy to make and attach to rhino racks.Quote:

Bottom right picture - that black plastic bit beside the nylon 'rope'. If you are not careful or there is too much wind, you will snap them. They cost about $8.50 each to replace and I carry a set of them now - just in case.

Looks similar in design to my Iornman. It works ok but it won't last a long time.
The weak points are the hinges that allow the legs to fold down and the support arms to swing out.
Mine got blown back onto itself last weekend while I was trying to rope it down and the hinge bent up a really bad angle. It didn't break but I wouldn't want to do it too often.
Looks like there is also a version of the foxwing that will fit rhino racks

I've attached some C-Channel Annexe rail on the side of my roof rack. Then I bought a Hikers fly. The hikers fly is light weight and folds into a small bag. It includes pegs and ropes. It can angled down to protect from wind and rain, and it's not noisy in the wind like a plastic tarp, or heavy when it gets wet like canvas.
I got my MIL to sew an edge over one side and I threaded through a cord, thick enough to go into the C-Channel. Total cost under $50. Zero risk of the annexe jousting with a passing branch.
I've submitted an article to LRW about making one, so if they publish it, I expect you all to buy a copy of the mag :D But here's a preview anyway.
I had posted this picture earlier in my roof rack thread, but somehow the photobucket link got changed.
My Ironman's extendable arm (I got for Christmas) bent in the middle the first time I used it, when water pooled on the top in heavy rain. The brother said it was 2.25 alloy into 2.5 and just too light for any weight. Ironman weren't interested when we called.
I got an extendable tent pole, drilled it to fit the screw from the bracket and its away, now stronger than the original.
So I'd recommend if you use one to make sure you get a decent slope on the thing down from the vehicle so the water runs off, or it could bend like mine.
I've used my Iornman during rain a few types and I've not had too many pooling issues. I just lowered one leg by 100mm and the extended the other by 100mm. With the Velcro straps done up the water flowed of the lower corner.
I'm still going to be very gentle with the Iornman because the fittings are not strong.
