If you camp in a treed area, you can look up for the obvious, but other than that its just a gamble:(.

I am so pedantic about not camping under trees, ( especially any form of eucalyptus ) spend maybe 10 min walking around looking up, it sometimes frustrates the heck out of my wife.
However I'd rather be in a slightly worse spot shelter wise than be crushed.
At some of the camping areas in Victoria there's no option but to camp near a tree - in that case I put the car right next to the tent or swag - at least that would absorb some of the impact.
