I am looking at getting a 1987 RRC which has had the 300tdi conversion to tow a 2500kg van.
Has anyone had any experiance with towing in a RRC with a 300tdi
or anyone with experiance towing with a 300 tdi,
it has a 5 speed manual
thanks,
I have always had a V8, mostly with 4.6 conversions and now have a tdi Disco.
I tow a trailer and or seedoo and sometimes my mates boat on tandem trailer, it weighs just over 2t.
We must keep in mind that is almost as much as the car weighs, I know its way short of its rating but its heavy all the same.
The V8 was brilliant, on gas with the 4.6 conversion and economy was 30-35L/100. Not great but went up any hill.
the Disco will do it, it now has D/gas and the engine and intercooler been done and is much better.
Up hills with smaller trailer its great, with big load or trailer its O.K.
What makes up for it is the economy, it goes up to 12L diesel and 4l/100 of gas.
So I would say get the 300 tdi but if you have a choice of 4.6L instead of the gutless 3.9 I go the V8 for towing.
The 3.9 runs out of puff on its own let alone for towing.
the diesel is good but remember its pushing it and take it easy.
thanks guys, I am yet to look at it in person and drive it but it sound alright over the phone, I have the same model with a very sick engine, 3.5 v8, so I have parts except for the engine
I have an 87 Classic with the 300tdi and manual the only issue is when taking off in 1st gear on anything up hill otherwise they tow well once your underway.
