My 1990 did the same thing ... I believe that if you find a 2cnd hand D1 steering rubber coupling and the lower shaft to the steering box...then your problems should be resolved .....

Hi All,
Whilst the NRMA serviceman was under the bonnet this morning he noticed a sizeable split in the rubber joint at the top end of the steering column closest to the fire wall. It seems to be held in place by four through bolts.
Has anyone replaced this? If so please advise what the part is called and the procedure to replace if its more than just undoing the bolts and slotting in a new one.
( NO doubt there's more too it ).
Oh, yeah the NRMA was out to confirm that my 7 month old starter motor had in fact died. 2 weeks ago it was the fuel pump. Never a dull moment with the old RR.

Thanks Mike, will check around.
The outcome of the starter motor problem was that the cone section of the starter motor has snapped off. I replaced it last night with a new one although have no idea where the broken parts have gone, fallen somewhere behind the flywheel. There have been no noises from there so hopefully they are resting somewhere out of harms way. I took the older starter back to Ingrams (has a three year warranty) and they stated that they had seen similar on "gas" converted vehicles when they have severe back fires. Given mine is petrol and no significant engine backfires I think it was metal fatigue.
Anyway all is good for now.
You can buy the rubber donut things off ebay for $40. Sometimes you have to buy it complete with shafts which is of course more expensive. It should be as easy as undoing all the bolts on the splines and sliding them in order to get the rubber donut out, although I have heard of people having to undo the steering box in order to get enough clearance.
Think this is the one for a disco:

Thanks for the info and assistance. I will check it out.
GuyG has found your coupling ... Pretty good pricing too
I would get under the car and look for a inspection plate ... either the bottom of the bell housing, or at the front of the bell housing, and hunt down those broken bits ... Although most of it is cast Aluminium ... I'm unsure, but would at guess think that there is a metal ring, (that was the sleeve for the spigot of the starter shaft) and it was part of that broken cast that fell down there
Thanks Mike, I had a good look and it doesn't seem to have any inspection plate any where. You are right about the casing being cast alloy but that ring that holds the starter shaft is another matter. At the moment anyway, it seems to be sitting somewhere safe as there has been no noise from the area and its starting without any issues. I will have another look in the daylight on the weekend and check it out further.
With regards to the steering shaft rubber coupling, does it just unbolt and drop out of does the shaft have to be dismantled? Its been on there for over 20 years so its probably going to be stubborn to get off.
Thanks to all that have assisted.
This should be the 1 for Peters ride ....

The shaft actually goes through the hole in the middle, so the rubber will not fall out. The shafts need to be removed ie at least one spline needs to be slid off in order to get it out, then undo the 4 bolts holding it in place. I have been told that there should be a sleeve between the shaft and the rubber which you will need to remove from your old rubber - can someone confirm this as my rangie did not have it.
