It appears that CKD Range Rover production in Australia ended in 1985

    Source:
James Taylor,LRE magazine May 2010 (last one) "The Air Con Story" states that CKD ended in Aust in 1985.

The Aust A/c was made by AMC as both an inbuilt unit and an aftermarket unit (under dash)on CKD RRC's, this would probably be the same as used in Valiants/Falcons of that era, branded as Kriesler from memory.

    cheers
Chrysler used their own Chrysler "Airtemp" air conditioner as an underdash unit and later an integrated a/c-heater. They used York 12cfm reciprocating compressors. Impressive cooling capacity and a real horsepower drain. My 265 engined auto CL would drop from 16 mpg to 12 mpg with heavy use of the a/c.

hmmm just checked my rego/license papers it's listed as eight numbrical digits then an F, I cant actually see the vin on the RRC as I screwed something over it

So is it a good thing or a bad thing to have a CKD ?

If the 3 first digits are 356*****F, then you have a Range Rover assembled at Solihull/UK

If they are 357*****F, your Range Rover is assembled locally in Australia as a CKD kit.

The letter "F" here indicate "Suffix F" which actually is a 1978 Model Year, launched October 1977.

    G'day Tuscan

I have a Vin No for you to interpret, I know the vehicle and driven it,

    SALLHAMV1AF 504531

I think that the Number HangOver quoted is the engine number.

    cheers

    Hi Vidar,

Very interesting site you have done and very informative.

Off the topic .... I have a 1981 RRC two door automatic (3 speed) and it has the same shifter shown on the brochure of RR Super Schulter Automatic of 1980.
I was told Winterbottom Fauls (landrover, RR agents of the time) here in WA arranged the conversions for WA farmers who did'nt want to drive a manual, though the first autos were not (I believe) available as an option until 82
I've never had auto checked, would be interested if it has the Chrysler Auto box fitted as the shifter to me looked like early model Ford type, or if it was ordered and shipped here to WA.
Vehicle is badged "automatic" fitted to tailgate which looks original and matches styling of vehicle overall.

Would anyone know if they sent these RR Super Schulter Auto's to Australia?

    Cheers,

    Baggy

One area that are a bit "shadowed" is the CKD - "Completely Knocked Down" - assembly/production of Range Rover.

I know that there has been a CKD production in Australia through parts of the 70's and 80's, but I need more information and pictures.
Someone who knows about Range Rover CKD that can tell or illustrate about this theme ?

    Range Rover Schuler FFRR 5000

Hi Baggy, very interesting information regarding your Range Rover.

Are you able to provide pictures of your Rangie and some of the mentioned details ?

I read in an Australian magazine I have (Wheels, Dec 1985) about Range Rover Schuler FFRR 5000 in Australia.

The Schuler firm transformed to Overfinch later on in UK.

But in OZ looks like Schuler stayed on.... !

Here are some pics from the article: "The one that got away":

    From the article:
"A distributorship agreement between Schuler and Hoerner's custom import company Quadramotive was signed in 1981 and since then he estimates he has spent about $100.000 developing the Australian version"

    Very interesting.....................

    Someone who knows more ??
