plastic box screwed to the right side of the steering column support bracket under the bottom plastic dash panel i do believe..
Does anyone know where the dome light relay/ delay is on an 83 rangie? The lights stay on with the doors closed and ignition off, when I turn the ignition on they go out. Tried the switch on the side of the column but made no difference.

And it is red in colour I also believe.... Mine was just sitting next to the column on the right hand side, but so was the rest of the wiring so it wouldn't surprise me if it were meant to be attached to something....

Just check whether a wire has fallen off one of the door switches and is to earth first. That is most likely.

Hmmm, sorry I didn't read the post carefully enough. The lights stay on with the doors closed and ignition off, when I turn the ignition on they go out
AFAIR the lights are always active, so if they go off with Ign on, then my guess is that someone has plugged incorrect wires together.
What else is connected to the dome light circuit and do they have a relay in an 83? I assume an 83 has the slide switch on the LH of the steering column.

I know that my 85MY RRc (10/84 build) has a time delay relay. The dome lamps stay on for abut 60 secs after the doors are closed unless the engine is started when they go out immediately.
If the 83 has this same system then it could be the timer relay that is at fault. AFAIK the relay are under the dash behind the radio slot above the accellerator pedal. Although mine is the first of the Phase II models with completely different wiring and instrument binnacle to the 84MY.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.
I had the exact same issue with mine- The door switches have corroded away and were intermittantly earthing. When they did earth (i.e. function as they should) it was exibiting the same symptoms as you have described. Ignition on and they go out. This is due to the time delay relay (mine is an 82 built 2 door, and has the time delay circuit and relay).
I pulled the relay out, pulled the red cap off it and had a look inside- the circuit board had split in two. I haven't bought a new one to test it as i'm buggering off the system and using my own wiring to some dome LED lights. Take that prince of darkness.
Thanks for the info, got my multimeter from work so will have a play this weekend if I get a chance.
