my money is on it being being pulled up past the flyweights and wont sit back down correctly as they have now contracted so you need to pull it apart...

Hoping someone could give some advise here?
Replacing the rotor button on my 93 RRC today and the new rotor button will now not line up with the original placement mark I made before removing the old one. It is now about 30 degrees anti-clockwise and has free play for another 30 degrees in the same direction. Not sure why it has moved (engine not cranked during replacement) but the cog looking part that the button sits on did pull up when removing the old one but will only re-seat in the 30 degree anti-clockwise position??
As it stands now it sits in the 2RH plug position. How can I get it to seat in the original postion?
The original position in the attached pic is in line with the screw to the left of the rotor button.
Here I was thinking it was an easy DIY :-(

There is a little nylon ring under the rotor button which holds the advance mechanism together. It looks like you broke it. Always worth holding down the dissy shaft with a screwdriver next to the rotor button when you change the button. Sometimes you can get them to go back together, you may have to rotate the crankshaft by spanner. If the advance springs have been pulled off their posts then you will have to dismantle all the top bits. You do not need to get the dissy out for this but I would have the little nylon clip replaced. One method of permanently fixing the clip is to remove the dissy, dismantle all the advance, cut off the pimple that holds the clip, drill and tap a 4mm thread into the end of the dissy shaft, fit 4mm screw and washer to suit. Don't forget to drop a touch of oil under the rotor button every 10K or so.

I feel your pain. I did that to our Disco very early on and had a huge ordeal finding a replacement plastic ring for the dizzy shaft. I ended up having a great experience with Coopers in Sydney.
As mentioned, you'll need to disassemble and reset the weights and springs. If you pull the dizzy all the way out you'll have to do a static timing setting again to get it right. If you leave it in, once the springs are reset you should be back in the ball park and the rest can be done with a light.
If you take the plastic cover off you can see it isn't that hard to get it apart.

i would go with what bee utey is saying. my dizzy would do the same thing unless i held the shaft down with a screwdriver whilst lifting the rotor off. i was trying different springs in the dizzy so got quite efficient at disassembling/assembling in situ. for your first time disassembling i would recommend pulling the dizzy out. it will take less than a minute to pull out. there is no need to rotate the motor, but you must mark/note where the rotor is pointing with the dizzy in then as you pull it out it rotates through some degrees (30?) which will be the starting point for when you feed it back in. if you are not comfortable with that then by all means rotate till motor is at TDC. if your start point when feeding the dizzy back in is off it is very easily picked up by the rotor being a noticeable distance out once the dizzy is fully home (ie it is very easy to align the distributor back into the correct position). if you don't have circlip pliers for the circlip i found a very small flat head screwdriver was ideal.
up to you whether you get it permanently fixed or reinstall being careful not to make it happen again.

Does it look broken or ok to use again? Mind you it looks like it has seen better days. Might be worth while getting a new one anyway.
After I take off the circlip what do I remove next? The three outside screws?
