haha, well yes. maybe a little! :)

And if temp sender checks out OK, then the next stop is the air flow meter. I had to find one in Cairns when our old beastie started to use fuel prodigously!
In fact, that's where I'd start to troubleshoot appalling fuel consumption.

Pete the pirate...
erm AFM...thats a lot of $$$$ isn it? Does anyone around melbourne have a spare i can check to see ifs that ?
Chris ... Your now living in the land of the .. "Wild card" (kinda like Pot Luck)
Given the K's and the age of your ride ...
As Pierre has said ...
Things that will be at fault are either the AFM & or the injectors .... Your on the right track to borrow, before purchasing, as too many folks have shelled out huge bucks with no results
You can also re-calibrate & check your AFM with a multi meter ..... Cockie55 may be able to help here
You can borrow items (AFM & injectors) from any of the Discos that have a 3.9 motor (up to 1998?)
Injectors .... If your gonna purchase them ... may I suggest the Bosch 19lb GEN111 (for ford mustang) from the USA Ebay site
Cheers
Mike
I happen to have an AFM you could borrow. PM sent...

Why not simply admit what most folk know... that the Rover V-8 is and always has been, a grossly inefficient abomination thats well past its use-by date!
Would'nt a Holden V-6 be easier on fuel ? And more reliable...

Would'nt a Holden V-6 be easier on fuel ? And more reliable... 6th October 2010 12:51 PMEr you do realise that a Holden V6 is 3/4 of a Buick V8 (AFAIR a 300 which was a development of the 215) and there are even some interchangeable parts.Quote:

So its basically the same engine . Only real difference is the ECU and this can be overcome with modern electronics on the RV8.

I just reviewed the posts on this thread, and it seems that all that has been done is to check the temp sensor so far.
Are the comments about the Rover v8 helpful? Or funny?
Chris has a problem .
My picks would be
1 temp sensor
2 vacuum advance. Chris suck on the hose and see if it sticks to your tongue. If not replace.
3 MAF. Chris, take off the MAF and spray the little hole you will see through the screen with electronic cleaning spray available form Jaycar. Dry it out and refit. In the connector tweak the little blades gently about 5degrees with a pair of needle nose pliers.
If none of that helps, the problem is deeper such as a worn out cam.

All small internal combustion engines are grossly inefficient - they generally have to be quite huge to come anywhere close to efficient... I not only still persist with mine, but have no intention of changing it. Given a bit of a boot, it goes quite well - I can still top 140 (on private property of course...) - That's on the GPS, not the speedo which is nearly 15 kays out.
If you want a car that is good on fuel, and not a 'Dinosaur' - go buy a Prius..., I'll still be cruzin' round in my 'grossly inefficient' Rangie with a smile on my face.:D
