Just a couple of points. You state"In my experience you rarely need more power off road. It's on road the 3.9 is gutless.First question is "how many ks" There is no use trying to spice up an engine with 200K plus. Maybe your problem is that the cam is worn out. The cheapest and best bang for the buck is to have an interceptor fitted and dyno tuned. You can gain about 20% across the board. You may find when it goes on the dyno that there are numerous wear items that need replacing /adjusting
Of course the best fix for gutless is a 4.6 block and retrofit the 3.9 stuff , but you also need to have the interceptor to get the best out of it.
Next is a 308 /350 transplant. An old ZF and BW will not take this power for long.
