    3.9 Exhaust

Time for a new exhaust system..the baffles in the centre box have collapsed and the rear box is holed.

Anyone have a good recommendation for a new centre box? and I've noticed a few RRC's running without a rear box.

A nice V8 burble without the freeway drone would be great

    Nice V8 burble

My '89 3.9 came with no rear muffler and appears to retain a standard looking forward muffler but wouldn't know if it was genuine Land Rover. No extractors or large diameter pipes. It sure does have a V8 burble - can almost hear each pot detonate at low revs and a very loud growl. Everyone knows when I'm arriving. The problem is that it gets intrusive after a while and drowns out stereo and conversation. Becomes a headache on long trips so now I'm looking to fit a rear muffler. I notice Roverparts have them - anyone know of any other sources or found that the local muffler shop is just as good?

I have a Flowmaster 50 series delta Flow main muffler with a straight through oval rear with a dog leg and centre expansion area.( I think Lukey). Flowmaster are baffled mufflers but lightly baffled.
Aluminized Steel : Flowmaster Inc. Exhaust Shop, Love That Sound!
I think mine is a 942452 but measure it up, as the one I have is almost exactly the same size as the OEM from inlet to outlet.
I had a small straight through rear muffler but SWMBO objected to the loud note under acceleration.
Mine has NO DRONE and gives a fruity "mouse" sound at low revs especially.

I recently got a new exhaust on my 3.9 Disco as I smashed the rear resonator offroad. With the holed resonator it droned terribly.
The new exhaust has retained the existing 2.5in pipe but got a new Lukey tri flow muffler and a hotdog resonator at the back. It is louder than before at slow speed/idle but can't be heard above 60km/h. It has a much better note than before.
There is no droning unless towing the camper but it only drones a little then.
I got the hot dog instead of a glass pack resonator like before as it was always getting damaged offroad and eventually was holed.

Replaced both mufflers on my 94 LSE two years ago. Went for the quiet option. Noise is fatiguing. No drone. Hardly any exhaust noise at all. Which is how it should be if you're carrying plenty of stock noise-suppressing trim as does this luxo-barge. Otherwise rip it all out and go straight pipes, Harley style. Sure you'll be deaf, but at least those with hearing will know you're coming...

That pretty much describes mine! Twin system with smallish straight through mufflers.

Thanks all - especially as you can't try before yer buy!
I'll go with the flowmaster centre and an oval glass pack at the back (thanks for the info Phillip) - should give the off idle burbles but keep the peace on the freeway!
Then again... straight though pipes, matt black, exiting through holes in the ARB rear bar...ooh err!

If your after sound then the 3" is pimp! But you will be sacrificing overall power unless you have some serious modifications.
    I rule!!!

    2.4" of Pure FURY!!!
