86 3.5 With a Lack of Top end Power HELP

Need help and advise on what can be the problem

On the open road in 5th foot pressed into the carpet.
Engine revs to 2000 to 2500 then climbs on higher, road speed is 80 - 85 KPH, if you go down hill it will climb and stay there untill you hit a bit of uphill.

The engine revs fine and in low gears will rev right round the dial.
But the highway drive is flat.

Have changed he plugs, leads, rotor, dizzy cap and the vacum advance.
Timeing is setup and the carb is running about 18 on the vacum gauge.

Just trying to gauge oppions before I splash out $200 on a set of magnicore leads. Only as I am not to confident in the leads I got with the service kit as they look and feel cheap.

So any info would be greatly recived.

It is set to about 8 degrees on tick over with the vacum pipe off.
I say about as the vacum pipe was pressed hard against the water pump cover so backed it off a little.

    How many Ks?
Sounds like a worn out camshaft to me.

Take off the Dizzy cap and give the rotor a twist, to see if the mechanical weights aren't seized

Then start the motor with a timing light .... record the advance verses the revs all the way to 3k (leave the vacuum advance connected)

    Cheers

Camshaft worn did not consider that as the engine was supposed to have had a rebuild by PO.
Need to get the top off to see what they are like.
But would that not be a gradual thing this just seemed to be fine when I drove it up from Perth and also for a few weeks untill I took it off the road to do the work to it.
Since then it has not been right, but will check it out.
Record advance with vacum connected, what sort of figures am I looking for?

Sounds like a good starting point.

Cheers Peeps will let you know what the out come is.

See Cockie55 response and PDF .... full Advance of 31 degrees at 3k

    http://www.aulro.com/afvb/technical-...ce-maps-3.html

Clean up the harmonic balancer and measure from the TDC ... add (white marker pen) extra 10 degree makers on it, to get to the 30 degree bit (use a ruler)

Don't disregard PhillipA's response either .... PO might have changed the CAM, but that does not garrantee anything

    Cheers

Do you mean the engine revs keep climbing but the road speed doesn't increase? It is a bit hard to tell from your wording.

If that is the case, then the clutch is slipping.

I got the impression it is just gutless and cannot make enough power to exceed 2500RPM in top, which is about 110 or so Kmh.

Thought about clutch but surely everyone knows that there is a fixed relationship between road speed and engine speed if the clutch is OK.
