    Reckon you might be onto something...

    Spinning fans that are'nt spinning fast enough.... are seen by the air-flow as a solid disc, or partially solid disc... Either way, more resistance to flow than spinning fast enough to produce differential pressure in front/behind blades.

    Like an aircraft propeller free-wheeling and not being driven.... gives more drag than the same prop when feathered (blades turned to give the smallest profile to the wind)

    Try the beast 'with' and 'without' jacking open the bonnet a few inches or more (whilst tying it down to prevent it flying open..). Should give a marked improvement in letting the hot air out from behind the radiator.

    Or go the whole hog and take the bonnet off completely and drive / idle the same conditions that would make the gauge climb... see if it still does and at the same rate and time.

    Hi Mike,
    When I spoke to you earlier I forgot to ask how deep the EL fan and shroud set up is, by the depth I mean from the face of the shroud to the back of the fan, I'm going to guess around 110 mm, is that close, more or less?

    My POS with the Chev does this on really hot days (40+) @ 100 + km/h. Doesn't go over 1/2 to 2/3 on the gauge, both thermos are going. If I stop and let it idle (both fans will be going) it will come back to 1/4 on the gauge in about a minute and the temp controlled fan will have a nap.

    Donk in mine has done well over 400k kms. Am not really concerned about tired motor causing "temp increase" @ 100 kms/ h or other. I just enjoy driving it.

    Overheating at speed means the cooling system either isn't big enough or isn't working properly. I'd look into the water-pump mods mentioned in this thread as helping that.

    Fans do not and cannot restrict airflow at 100km/h.

    Hi Forumites,
    As a close out to this thread this morning I went and purchased a set of EL Falcon thermo fans with the relay harness. Spent the day fitting the shroud to the radiator. Just come back from a test drive and it works a treat. Doesn't even rest higher than a quarter on the temp gauge, doesn't even come close to half way. Absolutely brilliant. The two $35 thermo fans off Ebay are now in the bin, not worth "two knobs of goat poo", as most pointed out on the forum.
    Special thanks to Mike RR90 who has been on the phone today pointing me in the right direction. Mike if you read this I'll give you a call and come around and look at the wiring, got me goosed, spent a couple of hours on the shed floor in the end the battery went flat. I went back to my old system which still works a treat.
    Also special thanks to DL for the photos last night of what a good fan set up looks like.
    Save myself a bundle of cash not buying the davies craig fans as well, luckily I got a refund because they were out of stock. Everything happens for a reason!!!!
    Hope this thread helps others in future, took me a while but I got there.

    Good to hear that you got the Ford relay harness complete with relay block ... that is the important part, and the main reason that you get 1 from a wreck .... As it is already setup for HIGH and LOW speeds, for the fans

    Once you've got that High & low working .... then you can get rid of those pesky, airflow blocking, thermo fans

    No worries .... I spent that same amount of time on my shed floor, sorting mine out also ....
