83 Classic with a Chrysler V8, engine cooling ideas!

    Hi Forumites,
83 classic with a V8 Chrysler SB, ok, prior to me getting the vehicle the owner tells me there were no cooling issues, engine has been in for 15+ years so everything I assumed would be OK. Nothing tells me any differently. Normal running around town fine, no big issues cooling was in the normal range maybe a smidgen under half way on the gauge.
The temp starts to creep if I'm in a long queue, as soon as I was moving again fine. I went to the Mark Webber day out at Barbagallo raceway Big mistake), queued for what seemed for ever, temp really started to get into the nervous area but never crossed into the red danger zone.
Considering everything I decided to get the radiator checked, do a bit of a flush etc etc, coming into summer seemed a good idea. Took the radiator to a few specialists, got various scenarios, cheap no guarantees as you would expect, expensive option basically a new radiator.
Got a later radiator, four core radiator from TRS in SA, as helpful as ever, fitted it, all good except the custom made radiator shroud no longer fitted the later radiator, the fan that was fitted looked like something off a Chinook helicopter, it was huge, on idle it drew enough air to turn the two air con fans on the front of the radiator.
So now I was up for modifications, I decided to go down the thermo fan route, bought two 12 inch super efficient fans for $35 (my first mistake) off Ebay, claims of super quietness and sooper efficiency. Again driving around the engine is fine, as soon as I stop for any lengthy period of time the temp starts to climb The fans cut in right on the money but they just don't seem to cut the mustard.
I've replaced the thermostat with the correct one for the chrysler V8 71 degrees opening, all works as it should. The original one was working and also 71 degrees C correct for the engine.
I've now cut all the small bits that form the guard on the back of the fans off to reduce the restrictions to the air flow. I've also gone down the track of purchasing two Davies Craig thermo fans, they haven't arrived as yet.
I'm hoping they draw enough air to actually suck the vehicle along without actually engaging drive, they should do considering the cost. The only need for the engine should be to turn the alternator to charge the battery. Yes I've fitted a "honker" of a battery now handle the new fans when I get them, I'm just hoping the alternator is man enough or I'll end up leaving the vehicle parked if I have to turn something on like lights or wipers.
I've also cut two holes in the panels in front of the front top door hinges and fitted stainless steel marine louvre vents to assist hot air passage out of the bonnet area, look quite "natty" actually, and you get a lot of hot air coming out Can anybody see anything I've missed here, is there anything else I can do to assist cooling? Anything anybody else has done thats a bit different apart from big holes in the bonnet or a grill that looks ugly. I don't have big spotties fitted before you ask.
    Any constructive comments welcomed.

I'll probably end up in the poo for saying this but............................

Buy American thermo fans, Summit has them on their website.

    Why?

Because Ive found that local fans dont move the air well enough and theres lots of rubbish on fleabay.

Even the DC units I found to be inadequate.

As much as I try to buy Australian the yanks have it down pat when it comes to thermo fans.

Id also check the position of the existing thermo's if you have them fitted. (Piccies help)

    Cheers,
    Tony

    cooling issue

hi nomad9 ive recently had two Davies Craig thermo fans fitted to the rangie however without the shroud and it works poorly-they needed the radiator out to fit them. to save you making a radiator shroud cancel the ordered fans and get falcon fans that come with shroud and fit almost straight in! BONUS. ill probably junk mine and fit falcon fans and wire them up to Davies craig thermostate and as for the fans ill just put them inside the car!1hahahahahahahah good luck.

You know that EF/EL fans draw 60 plus amps current don't you?

Agreed though the twin shroud setup works well but the fans are a bit greedy power wise so if you do use them make sure your Alternator is up to the task, for example I had a pair on a car of mine and they stayed on after shutting the engine down (My fault) and drained the battery in less than 10 mins.

What is the frontal area of your radiator core and how many rows? I had a 300 hp Chrysler 340TA in a Valiant CM with the normal Chrysler V8 with air conditioning radiator and no fan. The seven blade monster standard belt driven fan was bloody noisy so off it went. This car never over heated. In stop-start traffic on a hot day it would sneak up to the middle of the scale and drop back instantly when one got moving.

Have you explored all possibilities for the cause of overheating?

    Hi There,
I got the measurements from a AU fan set up with the shroud, this seems to be the go, a couple of friends have fitted this set up and they work a treat. When I took the measurements I had 100 mm between the radiator rib and the old fan pulley on the engine with the old fan stud bolts removed, the AU set up measured 110 mm, I looked at ways of moving things to fit the shrouded set up but I couldn't get the extra distance required. You might have more room with a standard engine in there but this lump of cast takes up to much room.
In addition to this the height of the RR radiator is smaller than the AU shroud so there would be some rooting around here as well, the seal has to be good so the air doesn't bypass the radiator. Appreciate the comments.

    Hi Brian,
I honestly don't belive the engine istelf is overheating, when the air is getting through the radiator the temp is fine. My problem is getting the air through the radiator nothing more. The engine is sweet, runs like a dream, uses no oil or water and no oil leaks, likes a drink though, I've sort of come to accept that.

    Hi Tony,
I don't see you as being in the poo, I'm supporting Australia buying Davies Craig, if they don't work I'll put them in the shed somewhere, I've still bought them!! I'll check out the web site thanks for the info.
