Well it seems to be so far. It runs quite well for something that has sat for over 12 months. New battery and away it went. Body isn't "too" bad...rough paint, little bit of rust, but no holes so far.

The drive is screwed but I'm ripping all that out today, so I should have a better idea of what's going on.

Simon, I reckon the Rangie roof is gonna be bigger than a Defender...so not sure. Thanks for the offer, Ron too.

Yeah probably, Ron was going to measure up. I went out and had a look, Thule bars, solid gal feet, the bar is 25mm x 40mm or thereabouts if you can find something longer.

I now have the bars. I'll try to get up to KLR tomorrow to check if they'd fit.

Thankfully it was hot on Saturday, and I didn't just rip everything out.

I dropped the fluids in both auto and TC on Saturday....and removed the inspection plate on the TC....nothing doing.....hmmm. So I put it all back in, and wet it up again to have a better look see. I'm so glad that Saturday was hot, and we didn't just rip out what we thought was a trans problem.

Today I got under it, and had one of my boys run the gears for me. lo and behold...front prop shaft is the thing making all the racket. Engaged the diff lock....it has drive, and all is quiet so it looks like the front diff has blown itself apart.

I'm gonna rip both out.....might be a good time to chuck lockers at it

So I got around to looking at the truck, and the drive issues.

One of the joys of working on clunkers, is that nothing is rusty and siezed on

After a bit of frigging around getting beers, and sitting there having a smoke and staring at the job at hand, I finally got the centre out....and this is what I found sitting in the housing staring back at me like a family of meerkats.

Overall, will be a cheap fix, which is great considering my $3k budget.

Looks like it's blown a diff before as it has later model axles & a 24 spline diff centre.

Chase up a lateish D1 diff centre & you'll be right to go .

The bars are about 6" too short. The legs would probably be OK. You might be able to lengthen the bars as they are just a bit of rectangular tube.

Only carrying 2 swags, some fuel and gas bottles....

If you want, I can lend you my RRC Rhino roof legs and bars - and a flat rack to bolt to them.
