my ENGLISH 4wd does 10l/100k

This is more of a curiosity than anything else, but is it viable to replace the 3.9 litre v8 gas-guzzler with a later model diesel engine, something that would have same or slightly more get up and go, but with the fuel economy that Jap 4WD owners boast about.. - My '89 Paj 2.5 non-intercooled does 24 to 26 mpg.

Yes. LR even produced a kit to fit a 300Tdi into a Rangie.
However, unless one is doing long distance country trips where you want the range, or towing a trailer/caravan, I doubt that it's financially viable.
One needs to look at the cost and then calculate how much fuel that will buy cf economy, etc.
An LPG conversion would be cheaper if you are only using the vehicle in the city. Country LPG costs are often too high to make LPG financially worthwhile. Range is the issue with LPG.

A fella on here just did it, Bee utey just did the d-gas for him also.
He had a donour vehicle, did a full rebuild on the 300 tdi motor with all parts including new head from UK and did change over to match the auto box.
He was still ironing out a few bits but looked very professional and seemed to go fine.
When run in, he wants a drag with my Disco.
Guess we never really grow up.
I can PM you his number if you like.
I think it cost around $10k though.
Lots of fuel can be bought for that.

There is the rub.
I did some very rough calculations recently that showed in the 6 or so years I have owned my RRC about 30 something thousand dollars of fuel have gone down its throat.
If I had converted it to diesel right at the start it would have probably still used about 15 - 20 thousand dollars worth of fuel, so I would have barely been in front.
And in all that time I would not have had that lovely Rover V8 noise that I love, plus the ability to drive it almost as an auto (will pull from almost no revs in 4th gear).
RRTurboD has a RRC that has a 300TDI in it. It runs well and is his everyday car.
Why not send him a PM.

I converted my soft dash lse 5 years ago. I put a tdi 300 in it as the car was all set up for a tdi engine on the assembly line. All I had to do was to replace the engine mounts .Everything was just bolt on .Even the mounting points for filters and radiator etc were already there.
I purchased a low kls wreck removed the parts needed, and sold the rest.
After completing the conversion I was able to sell the V8 engine gearbox and transfer box. So overall the conversion cost less than $3000.oo.
If any one has any questions ,more than happy to help.
A few blokes have shoe horned the 6.6L V8 Turbo Diesel Duramx with 6spd Allison auto, into GU Patrols, engine is a beast, 350-500BHP, around 10l/100km if your gentle....love to see one in a LR,could be a bit pricey, but arguably the best TDV8 around.
My 93 Vogue is our everyday transport and will continue to be so even though I now have a P38A
Its specs are at the bottom of this post, Since I got stuck in and corrected all the faults of the origional conversion it has been totally reliable and performance has been more than acceptable. I actually find myself holding back so as to not be first away at traffic lights all the time.
As for economic viability, I have no Idea but would assume no. I guess if I was committed to economic viability I wouldn't be driving two old Range Rovers and wouldn't have sold our 2 yr old Kia Rio
