That is one sweet looking Classic. Half your luck in getting it let alone getting it for a good price. I'm jealous.....lol. Put in a top hat 3.9 or 4.6 block AND refurbish the whole cooling system. Or perhaps just install a new short engine without the top hat modification and don't overheat it - should be fine for many kilomteres/years. It seems to me that over heating is the cause of most engine block and head gasket problems in these engines. And whack in an engine saver kit.
Modifying that car for diesel or anything else and you might be just destroying the value and 'want or buy/sell factor' of one of the best original Classics I have seen for a long time.

At $3000 yours is not a disaster... you've got a good looking interior (more classical style than my softdash...) and the outside looks straight.
Lets face it, the engine is not *that* far off wearing out, so doing it now rather than down the track is a bonus in disguise.
The only suggestions are.... put some lights in your instrument cluster if you can't read them at night.. Maybe LED globes...
- And build up Bee-Utey's BOSCH Ignition replacement amplifier before your LUCAS one dies...
I was going to put a diesel in mine, but co$t of doing it AND another auto trans (change points are difFeRAnt to petrol) and time stuffing around for limited gain...and reduced re-sale value will most likely see me going for LPG.- If I keep it...

Nope, AFAIK its a LUCAS abomination, from The Prince of Darkness, so is your injection system
... But I may be rongg about the injection...
Incidently, your fuel figures are pretty well on the money from my own experience and what others here have been saying.
Engine saver is a temperature alarm, like this one on EvilBAY

- ignore the fact that its for a forklift, the same one is used for 'everything'. Only variation is in the plastic case, with or without flange.

Amplifier: gadget for taking a small signal and making it into a bigger one. In your vehicle it lives on the side of the distributor, taking the small pick-up signal and making it into a bigger signal to fire the coil. Made by Lucas in a smoky little factory in the English Midlands somewhere, they are known to take fright and die at inopportune moments. Best replaced with a sun-bronzed Aussie-built Bosch amp and matching coil.
