What engine is this on , a VM diesel ?
I searched oil leaks and got alot of stuff but not much of use.
I've been having constant issues with my sump leaking.... I've regoo'd it 3 times. but it still leaks like a sieve.
It has a engine girdle/cradle/sandwich plate whatever you prefer to call it.
I've cleaned the block, both sides of the girdle and the sump thoroughly and tried permatex ultra black twice and sikaflex once and flattened the sump the first time
no good...the last time it was really bad (just before my trip) 0.374L/100km of oil
so at the moment the sumps off, engine cling wrapped (to stop dust/dirt)
and I'm wanting to know what other successfully used?
and for the rain to stop...![]()

Geez, I have to hand it to you for exactitude!!!!0.374L/100km of oil
There would have to be at least .004litres caught in the bolt threads.
Regards Philip A
I just let mine leak, but as it only leaks 0.0542L/100KM, it's not so much of a hassle for me...![]()
If you need to contact me please email homestarrunnerau@gmail.com - thanks - Gav.
Sure its not leaking further North? - and dripping down onto the sump via the rear axle ?
Maybe a differant kind of gasket ? More goo of another brand ?
Or;-
- Just replace the engine with a (boring) japanese one...![]()
how tight is your oil filter
When I rebuilt the 4.4 for my last RR, I was determined that the sump was not going to leak. I cleaned all mating faces with thinners, then applied a thick bead of threebond sealant (around $75 a cartridge) to the sealing face of the block (this was with the engine upside-down on a stand, but you could do it with the engine insitu by applying the sealant to the sump instead), then rested the sump in place, inserted the bolts but did not tighten them. I tightened the sump bolts down enough so that the sealant was still at least 2mm or so thick between the mating faces, then left it for an hour before doing the bolts up neat. This leaves a thick gasket of sealant between the mating faces. It has never leaked a drop in 115,000km.
For several years I've been applying loctite hydraulic thread sealant to my sumpplugs when refitting them after oil changes. This solves another annoying leak area.
thanks guys.
Yeah I'm sure its the sump I washed down the motor. Idel for a long time and inspected where the leak are coming from..
yeah normally i wouldn't be as exactitude but i put a fair amount of oil in it on the trip and knew the trip distance.
its running HPR30 if thats anyones next question.
