MIsfiring ,too rich mixture, Need help

Well unfortunately the old girl has left even Rupert bewildered. We stripped and rebuilt the dizzy and confirmed spark rotor action etc. It cranked over momentarily but would not continue. Even swapped the leads around one post to try and get this thing to line up. No joy in that as the chopper wheel /sensor relationship is not altered in any way.
Still trying to source a good distributor to at least change and see if the distributor is the cause for all this misalignment.
At least I do not feel so bad on not being able to solve the riddle

The timing chain stretch ... Have you physically checked as bee utey has suggested?

Take the Drivers rocker off to check the rock of #8 to the TDC of #1 .... Also putting a socket on the crank and shifting it "back n forth" and comparing the movement of the dizzy to the crank, will tell you how many degrees the chain has stretched ....

.... anyone changed the Coil? ....

Yes we checked the timing chain and gears a while ago. All was lined up chain was good and no teeth missing on the gears. Changed coil as well and as stated previously we are getting spark. All electrics seem ok. Have spark at plugs although even with a solid dose of igniter down the throat it will only fire over momentarily.
Its due for rego shortly and I am reaching the conclusion that she has had it, and its time to go.
Cheaper to get another than spend the $$ to try and put her back on the street

Even though you have spark I'd still try yet another coil, plus see if you can borrow a spare dizzy.

I have been going through similar issues with maine for over 6 months now.
So far: new plugs, leads, dizzy cap, rotor, coil, and a second-hand MAF got me running well for a while. Aligning the dizzy was troublesome but I followed the tips from Bee Utey and Phillip A and got there eventually (ended up moving the leads around the dizzy posts by 1 so avoid interference from the vacuum advance on the thermostat housing).

Then I got the fast idle when coming to a stop. This dissapeared by pulling the Byepass and cleaning it.

I then decided to clean the oil-trap and all the lines to the plenum and found a crust of baked on crud in the rocker cover. Having done this I find there is no vacuum to the vacuum advance so it will now be a weekend of stripping the plenum, rocker covers etc and having a big cleanup.

Now I have an erratic Tacho which was jumping around for a while. Now sits at zero revs on idle and reads approx 1000rpm less than it should across the rev range.

New power steering pump arived today. I am now waiting on a brake master cylinder and a double cardon driveshaft rebuild and the fuel pump is starting to make some erratic noises.

God this is frustrating.....:mad: I bought the thing to enjoy it at weekends and I don't trust it to travel further than the end of my road unless I am travelling with a second vehicle.

However......I still love my classic rangie and will persevere (even if I have to take the drastic action of fitting a 4.6 :), or a 5.0 :D, or a 5.7:twisted:

Where the hose of the vacuum goes into the plenum ... insert a pin to clear the hole ....

To see if the injection side is not at fault ... You could test via ....
Pull the fuse or relay on the fuel pump
Pull out the plugs & clean them ... or install some known good spark plugs
Spray startyabarsted up the intake and note if starts better .. (you can actually keep the motor ticking over on the stuff)

You have got to try a known good distributor!

I see back in 09 you had some weid problems with it when looking at old posts.

Get someone else to check the leads as you have probably done it so many times you are not capable of doing it anymore.

G`day , i`m sure your sick of it by now but ............

I think you have a timing light ? Put the leads where they should be .

Set the vacuum advance shaft to full lenghth and refit as this .

Remove the vacuum pipe from distributor .

White mark you balancer timing marks at 5+/- degrees and white the tab also .

Loosen distributor bolt and with a helper and the timing light ....

If the battery not great pull the plugs out .

Rotate the engine in the normal way when starting .

Rotate the distributor while the engine is also rotating and line up the white marks with aid of the light .

Bolt up distributor and don`t be concerned at where anything is positioned and if need be remove the distributor and move it around so`s the marks line up , don`t replace the advance pipe as yet .

If it now has spark and the timing light flashes on the marks but still won`t start leave the distributor and look elsewhere for the starting problem .

No matter what`s happing inside the distributor , doing this is telling you #1 cylinder is sparking at 5 degrees and is correct for starting as the other cylinders follow and if you have spark at the plug all preceeding should be correct .

After trying to start it a couple of times recheck the timing marks with the light , if it has altered at all you are finding the problem .

Hi Guys,
I am retiring the vehicle, its beaten me and as I am not wasting any more time and $ on it ( after new filters, leads, plugs, timing cover, radiator etc) just on this last problem and still left with problems plus if I got it going I know I need to do some suspension bushes etc. I am going to flog it off on ebay for someone for parts as it had a lot of good stuff on it and if you had the space would be the cheapest option for anyone wanting to fix up their rangie. ( rego ran out two days ago) gearbox and transfer case are all good plus all the other bits and pieces that cost heaps even second hand.
After 20 years of ownership its time to say good bye to the old girl. We have a 97 P38 rangie so we dont need two 4wds anyway.

Sorry that I wasnt able to find the issue (still think its all distributor related) but I am over it.
