You change the position of the rotor (and therefore pickup module) vs the dizzy, by turning the dizzy after loosening the cinch nut.
The rotor should be just past (clockwise) the no1 wire position in the dizzy at TDC no1 firing. ie if you are looking down at the dizzy, the rotor should be 5 past 5 if no1 TDC firing is at 5. It should start anywhere around there.
Can I suggest you get a texta and mark the no1 wire position on the cap onto the rim of the distributor. If the rotor is not 5past the mark you have made, TURN THE DISTRIBUTOR until it is.

with the ign off both pos/neg will be bat or there abouts .
( The LR manual says no volts also but real world there`s volts )

ign on should be point volts both pos/neg as in 0.xx

when cranking neg should read above the point volts .

This is for amp switching .

the 2 pickup wires should show 2k-5k ohms and also move the wires about when ohms connected

i'm no help technically and this is just a suggestion, would it be of benefit to throw up a/some photo(s), eg looking down on the dissy? these might reveal something obvious to those who do know which words can't.

I understand that rotating the dissy will change the position to the pickup but that also changes the position of the rotor to the cap. To my thinking the rotor must be pointing at the distributor post at the same time as the star cog moves past the pickup module. As spark would then flow to that corresponding lead or am I way out?
I also think my vacuum advance is cactus as it doesnt move when I apply vacuum to it and will only move in when I apply a fair bit of pushing in on the advance rod. I can feel it push against the diaphram inside but I would think it should operate far easier than it is
Thanks for the heads up on the voltage. Didnt make sense that you are measuring voltage from the bat + to essentially an earth and have no voltage. Haynes gets it screwed up once again.
Will finished the distributor to amp lead tomorrow and reassemble and try again.

With ignition on I have 12.7 volts from Bat neg to coil +
Manual says it should be no less than 1volt of battery voltage. Battery voltage was 13.07 so figured thats ok. Are you saying it should be 0?
When measuring ohms on two wires from dissy to ignition amp is this with ignition on or off and to measure this am I just putting one probe on one wire and the one to the other or what? Sorry to ask a dumb question.

No thats right , should be similar with ign off pos bat to neg coil .


Disconnect the plug and probe the two wires doesn`t matter which way around . ( to the pickup that is )

No volts near ohms or the meter will be useless .

Don`t know about the haynes but the factory gives 6 tests and a 7th visual for this type ign also one of ours has this type .

Did you dismantle the distributor shaft? If not it should be in the same relationship as when it last ran. Did you remove the ignition sensor when you were diddling with the vacuum advance?
There are two advance mechanisms, centrifugal and vacuum. to test centrifugal, just turn the rotor clockwise as far as possible and it should spring back. This is only a little bit so be careful. If it doesn't spring back then the outer and inner shaft have seized and you should drop a drop of oil down the cenntre of the shaft.
The vacuum advance should pull the inner plate around if you suck hard on the pipe. generally if you can hold vacuum on your tongue then it is OK.
Look unless you disturbed components and put them back in the wrong place it is not possible for the relationships to change,.

I asked where you lived because I live at Avoca Beach. I may be going over to Blacktown tomorrow night and if you live on the way I could maybe call in. However as of today I am still awaiting an ebay timing light from the USA, so hope you have a timing light. So anywhere from Hornsby to Blacktown /Eastern Creek may be possible.

Hi Phillip, I did dismantle the shaft completely and it only goes one way that I can see. The bottom of the shaft is a fixed plate with two posts on it for the weighs to be installed on. again it only goes on in one place. all other bits are then again assembled in only one position. I will reassemble tonight and fix up the lead to the amplifier.
Even though it doesn't make sense to me, given my perceived misalignment, I was still getting spark (not sure how strong) at the plugs.
By the way I am at Winston Hills and would be happy to see you if you had the time

What is the ignition sensor? My dissy has the vacuum advance screwed on the side of the distributor body. No wires araound other than the two coming out of the distributor from the pickup.

The sensor which generates a voltage when in proximity to the " chopper wheel" on the shaft. It should be about 10 thou from the chopper and its position is adjustable. If you took it off the plate you should have marked its position, but I am not sure it can be moved laterally in a timing sense.

Now I have not done much with these things as I have not had a problem, but I think the charge is generated at the trailing edge of the chopper, so this may be why you think that the chopper does not agree with the rotor.
