If you're not a stickler for total originality...........
2 door from 72 to 84, uprated engine (350 Chev for example), Ritters C4 / 9 LT95 conversion, EL thermos, LPG for frugality. (Just like mine :D )
Benefits are strength, very cost effective maintenance and running, and no electronics.
If you're needing to use the back seat a lot a 2 door can be a PITA. 4 door with the above would be my pick. They are all classics, getting more complex through the timeline.

I reckon a 93 model Vogue is the best keeper of the lot.(Just like mine)
NO ABS (mucho dinero to fix)
NO AIR SUSPENSION (DITTO)
NO SUNROOF (DITTO DITTO Rust)
NO POWER SEATS (DITTO DITTO switches etc)
NO SRS AIRBAGS (so any bullbar OK)
However the pluses
3.9 with hotwire
Great electrics with proper good quality connectors.I have never had an electrical problem.
great coil suspension
Legal to remove roll bars as sold in other markets without.
Reasonable quality trim except for the centre console which is crap.
Great quiet BW transfer
Beautiful ZF 4HP22.

'87, 4 speed auto, LT230, 2inch lift, lovel springs and koni shocks, maxi drive lockers and axles front and back, BFG KM2's with 235/85/16's, vented discs, bash plates, leather upholstery a must, working aircon, high compression 4.6L motor with Haltech F9 computer, mandrel exhaust, snorkel and every hose replaced plus of course a good radio with Dynaudio or similar speakers.
Thats what my 2nd to last RRc was and boy was it good.
Bar work, winch and lights are also on the list but I assume you be doing that anyhow.
Budget for the above work is $20k incl of car and I guarantee it will run 150k km's trouble free.

That's right. The room in the back of the LSE is huge. No comparison with P38 or L322. I went to the motorshow and the new stuff from Range Rover doesn't compare. You'd be knockin' your knees in any of the current product line-up. Case closed.

I think it comes down to what level of luxury you like, I love my 75 2 door because its original, the steering is heavy, its loud, It uses to much fuel, the seats are sunken and give you a sore back but its old. And that's what makes my RRC the best.
Every body is going to have a different opinion on what is the best, and they are of course, all wrong :D
If you don't have much of a budget and don't want many mod cons then the best RRC will different to somebody who is after those attributes.
At least the body shape hasn't changed much so all you have to do in that department is choose how many doors you want. (2 door isn't advised if the back seats will be used regularly)

Right! Sounds like most peoples Rangies are made of all the best bits of all model years anyway. I know for sure that I will want a four door as there's usually more than two of us heading into the bush. I looked at a LSE but I just think they are too long and awkward looking (sorry Lse fans) and wouldn't be as good offroad. By the sounds of things a 4 speed is the pick of the auto's, and having plenty of experience (and spare parts) with the lt230 i reckon they're the way to go. So i presume I should be looking at an 85 to 88 model?? Narrows the field a bit! Anyone got one for sale???
