    ZF Power steering reservoir leaking...

Someone gleefully told me that the black placky power steering reservoirs have a limited life in RRC's, to do with the excessive heat in the engine room.

    Anyone know for sure ?

    - Oh yes, mine is leaking/weeping somewhere 'cos the pipes underneath are always damp with fluid....and I know the pump leaks where the rubber pipe is clamped onto a side-fitting. - even with the engine (very) off. - drops land on the steering rod, which runs down to the ball-joint, then falls off next to and in front of the LH wheel.... Not where one expects to find an oil leak.

De-greased everything in sight, wiped and cleaned hoses down... and this is the result from standing 3 hours. At least its clear where the problem is...

Are there any dramas in replacing this hose regarding air bubbles in the pump system ? - Runs from under reservoir to the side of the pump, appears to be the intake, so 'no' pressure.

Pics for your perusal and amusement. Taken from under and over...

geez I would be a lot more worried about that radiator hose than the PS hose. AFAIR, you were the one with the totally destroyed heater hoses. I fear you may need a new water pump with that corrosion (plus the thermostat housing). What on earth did the PO do with the car to put it in that state? The whole engine must be cactus.
Just tighten the clamp on the PS hose. There is no issue replacing it as the reservoir is higher than the pump but some contortions with a small spanner should do it. It did mine..

Yes agree with last post re the coolant hoses. Change them out.

Cant say that the heat on the ZF parts is an issue.
Mine is 16 going on 17yrs now and not a leak in sight. And it is mighty hot under the hood of a P38.
I still have the original crimped fittings on the hoses.
You wont have a problem with air in the system as it will purge its self of air.
Just check the level over a few hours of running as any air is expelled top the system back up.

    Tighten the hose clamps.........

    ......... or replace the hoses

    - fairly simple job, if a bit messy - having an extra person available will assist when it comes to bleeding the system

Place a drain pan to collect the steering pump fluid that will be spilt - after fitting new hoses refill with new fluid and bleed the system (same as you do brakes) at the bleed screw- keep the p/s reservoir topped up while your doing this - and turn the steering lock to lock with the engine idling whilst bleeding.

Raise the front tyres off the ground to save tyre wear from turning the steering lock to lock on the one spot.

You shouldn't have to bleed the system if you replace that hose as it is not IN the system only ON the system.

... That was my reaction when I had a good look at the hose ! Intellectually I think the water pump will be U/s, just have to psych myself up to doing the hose and actually SEEING the mess....

The PS hose is just irritating / embarrasing. - Since tightened up a good 2 turns, to the pont where its about to jump a thread if I go any further. Leak much abated (for now). New hose later...

Its been parked up ever since.

The PO (2nd) had it looked at by some local "mechanic" who, incidently, has retired and moved away just before I bought it.... good thing, as I'd have been sorely tempted to say a few things...

The OO had it regularly serviced by LR dealers, the book has lots of stamps in it, all at approx the right times etc.

The wheels fell off at 70,000km with the 2nd owner, and I bought it at 140K. Now done 170k or so. None of my mechanical (tradesmen) friends would have let the hoses reach that point, despite not being LR enthusiasts...

Thanks to all, now happy that the feed-hose is not going to cause endless hassles with air etc. Just being on the safe side.

Those hose fitting leaks are a recurrent problem. Best success I've had thus far is with a better style of hose clamp; get rid of the worm-drive clamps and replace them with the hydraulic hose clamps that apply pressure around the full circumference.

I remember a thread from ages ago about a power steering stop leak additive, may have been a Wynns one. From memory it worked a treat on someone's Classic Rangie. Might be worth a shot.
