    Best Oil for 3.9 V8s?

    Hi,

Can anyone recommend good oils for early 3.9s (V-belt) and later (serpentine) ones as well? Never gets below about 15 degrees C here.

Tried searching, but it didn't help!

from memory any 20-50 will do.
I generally go penrite, if you want to splash out on the ol' gal, you go a semi-synthetic.
The cost of full synthetic puts me off

I think its more importnt to have regular changes

I used to use 20-50 but could only get Valvoline 15-40 in Carnarvon so used that.
I found the engine subjectively more perky on 15-40 and found it didn't use any more oil than the 1l per 5000km that it always did.

So I have used 15-40 for the last couple of years .
Read "Bob is the oil guy " and you will tend to use thinner oils.
Of course it depends on how old and tired the engine is but mine has done 208KK now and is fine.

Whatever 20/50 is going in Woolies , its usually actually a Gulf General blend , proved to just as good as any of the expensive stuff .Usually $15 for 4 litres in Woolies !! (That if you have a Woolies in Seth Efrica )

Seth Efrica has a Woollies, but they only sell clothing and food over here!

Shell Helix HX5 or Delo 400 will do the trick.

    Midas, Makro, maybe even Pick&Pay.

I use Penrite HPR 30 (20W-60) which is probably a bit thick for Auckland however the engine is full of leaks and looking through the oil filler hole, it's pretty sludged up. It's a v belt with 185 000 kms on the clock with no service history.

Penrite HPR 15 (15W-60) is a semi-synth which is prob best for better condition engines and serp engines.

The Penrite oils have high levels of ZDDP which is essential to prevent cam wear in RV8s.

    I buy a 10l trademens pack.
    from super cheep type dealers.
this was recomended for the leyland and rovers and is the only oil i could find that was recomended in the falcon owners manual.

Valvoline Trade Pack Engine Oil - 20W-50, 10 Litre - Supercheap Auto Australia

I havnt had to top up between changes.my other car is a BFII Egas wagon and it uses 6.5l per service so i have to buy 20l at a time.

I havnt asked if i ca buy it in bulk at better rates from other agents but at $4L not worth chasing.

have to watch delo 400 type oil.

this is what we have been using at work on newer cars.toyota hilux diesel etc.we just changed to delo 400LE as we are now updating to common rail diesels and euro 5 engines.
might be overkill for all but the late model cataliser V8.

we use halvoline premium plus in the recent holden and falcon [and others] these are just making it to service intervals and the hitech cams dont like it.

note-I service local government fleet and they follow the recomended maintanence unless there is an issuethe comodores are having "issues" when they are due for replacment.other vehicles seam to cope finedue to the low milage on most vehicles per year we normally work on vehicle age.
