My original thought on reading the first post was that something mechanical would have broken long before now if enough resistance was generated to slow the car dramatically. A CV or diff gear or something would let go with a bang.
We are talking tonnes of resistance here.
That is what led me to say handbrake as this is common and IMHO about the only thing that would go on for lots of Ks without a BIG BANG.

Bite the bullet....do the hard yards... face the music and go for a substantialy long, highest speed possible/safe with minimal brake use... The idea is to see if you have mechanical dragging on any of your wheel-brakes or wheel bearings.
Jump out and feel the hand-brake drum after 5 minutes... and its Uni joint, plus the rear-shaft uni if you have one.... Also the front-shaft uni's.
Otherwise, feel each of the 4 wheel-rims for unusual heating., as well as the axle-ends for wheel-bearings.
If you have'nt roasted your hand.... drive longer and faster and try again.! - I'd be tempted to drive it till something goes Bang

I've had the new tyres on (32's) for a few days now and the car has been terrific. I've checked for abnormally hot components after a long(120k) fast trip up the freeway but can find no fault. I've checked the brakes aswell as the handbrake and apart from needing new discs all round soon I can find no fault there either
I have jacked up each wheel individually and rotated them with the cdl engaged and disengaged and the difflock works as it should.it has worked perfectly since I removed the larger treaded tyre. Maybe that lessened any pressure in the transfer case that may have jammed high range. I'm not sure
So at the moment all I can do is enjoy the thing and keep an eye on tyre wear
