    Broken RRC

    Hi all
I was having a great time today driving home from work on the F3 when I hear a gentle clunk from the rear and the vehicle felt as if I had the brakes applied. I came to a stop and had a look under but couldn't see anything obviously wrong. I could only just barely move the car forwards but something was very wrong. I dropped it into low range and it drove fine just like normal in low, but back into high it still struggled. It was very stiff between low and high.
I drove the 20 ks home in low just crawling along.

What should I check first? I have basic skills and tools but will give everything a go.
It is an 87 3.5 efi with zf auto and lt230 TC.
Recent things of note are I replaced the ATF in the TC a couple of days ago
I also fitted my spare tyre to the front of the vehicle at that time which has much more tread than the other side but I don't know if that would affect things too much.
Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated
    Stehl

Yes I used ATF instead of gear oil as that is what was already in it.
I have seen it mentioned a few times on different sites that the lt230 can run either gear oil or atf.
Should I only use gear oil?

Im sure they use 80w90 gear oil , Its the manual lt77 and r380 gear box,s that you use a form of ATF.

    You sure its a LT230 T/C and not a borgwarner viscous T/C

    Thanks for the link Rangieman
I'm not absolutely certain that it is an lt230 I'm just going off the specs I have found on the net for that year model.
I have just tried driving it again now that has cooled down and it's stuck in low.
I'll drain the fluid tomorrow and see if I can find the problem.

Does it have a centre Difflock on the high low lever as in move the h/lo lever to the side to engage the centre diff lock ? if it does its a lt230

Yes if I push the hi/low lever to the left it operates the cdl.
I've had the vehicle for 9 months now and covered 15 k in it (287 k total)
I don't know it's service history before I bought it but I purchased it from the original owner. I wonder how long it had the wrong fluid in it.

Rejoice ! you are not afflicted with the BW transfer case... Some last beyond the car's life whilst others suicide before middle age. - Don't ask which one I've got

IMHO their only usefulness is for lazy drivers who find it too hard to reach down and move the lever across to 'Locked'.

The LT 230 is worth spending $$$ and rebuilding properly, - assuming yours is damaged of course...
