Also check the temp compensators on the side of the carbies. The bi metal strips gum up and are NLA. Take the plastic cover off and remove tje 2 screws holding the strips in. The rubber plungers should be permantly in the ports here unless its below about -5! Bend the end of the strip so that the rubber plungers are held in the port with a bit of tension. They sort of work like an auto choke but are not needed here!

Or throw the strombergs away and put SU's on instead, they stay in tune and give better mid range power and economy. The best ones have remote float chambers

if mine and running CDs i`d first check for oil in the dash pots and then the diaphragms for holes .

When or if you take the tops off i`d suggest checking the pistons move freely and the needles are attached , screws are tight ETC also note which direction things face .

Sounds like one carb is not working and the sooty plugs may be that the one working is over fueling to keep pace .

If flooding as suggested it may run well at high revs and poorly at low .
