de-pressurise fuel system to change filter, is it needed?

I went to change the fuel filter today and after a quick flick through the manual it suggests de-pressurisings the fuel system first. This involves removing the pump from the tank which apparently needs a special tool.

I have never had to do this on any other vehicle so Im wondering if its just a precautionary thing thats not really needed?

yes, it does and no, its not that complicated.

Find the fuse or relay that drives the fuel pump, pull that then start the engine.

The engine will run for maybe 30 seconds sputter and die, hold the accelerator flat and crank it for another 5 seconds. If it doesnt restart, congratulations, the fuel lines are now deperssureised.

after changing the filter simply replace the fuse or relay key the ignition to on and wait till the pump times out (you'll hear it) repeat and then as soon as the pump times out again start it up.

    Done.
