    erratic 89 classic tacho

    Hi all .
My tacho functions fine in daytime . Turn on the headlights and it jumps upwards around an extra thousand and pretty much hovers around there untill lights out .
Any clues where to start looking .

Dodgy alternator (regulator) probably. Also check positive power feed stud on the firewall. It's just to the left of the brake pedal and slightly higher. Check with a multimeter for a voltage drop from engine bay to cabin.

As Telf said, probably the beginnings of an alternator fault. It would pay to check how secure the tacho feed wire is on the back of the alternator.

My tacho just died suddenly... which pointed to the alternator... still charging enough to keep the idiot light off, but was shunting huge amps around itself as internal short. - Running red-hot !
If in doubt, get 'Someone Who Knows' to test it.

    - Fixed mine with a new alternator for $545. - But there must be cheaper prices out there. I've got the serpentine belted engine.

bigjon suggested checking wiring on back of alternator... good idea, do it for all and every fault, including flat tyres...
