93 classic with 138L fuel tank sender problems.

    Just a quick question,

Ever since I bought the Rangie the fuel gauge is all over the place once the tank gets below half way, shows nothing and then it will come up a bit then show nothing but the fuel light. Since I'd be looking at a small fortune to fill the beast up I tend to put 40 or 50L at a time but leaves me with no confidence as to how much I have left as I do mixture of on road offroad/beach etc.

I have a long range tank about 140L I've been told. Would I have a different sender/fuel pump assembly and perhaps the wrong value sender? Is this common?

Any info would be appreciated, as I was going to fit an aftermarket gauge anyhows.

    Cheers

I would say that the arm has been bent on installation or maybe the actual wiper is damaged and not making contact.

My 140L Long Ranger shows full for about 50 litres , then 3/4 corresponds to about 70 litres left,ie 1/2 a tank and works normally until empty.
Unless you had endless patience to make up a new arm and then experiment , this is how they work.
In your case however it sounds like your wiper has been damaged. It is tricky to get the sender through the tank hole and needs quite a bit of turning and jiggling, as the hole is nearer the front wall of the tank than standard.

    thanks Philip ,

You also wouldn't happen to know the resistance value range of the sender?

    Cheers

No sorry . My original is still in the tank.
However you do realise that the sender is part of the whole big plastic assembly housing the fuel pump etc. Look on ebay and you will see.
IMHO it would be hard to set up a different sender without chopping holes in the tank.
