Thread: 92 RR, Weird Brake Issue

Sorry for my first post to be a cry for help.

I recently bought a 92 RR, first RR so I'm new to this. Usually had chargers and the ilk.

Everything was going fine for a few weeks, then brakes failed on me. Let me define fail...

30kms/h, press brake pedal, pedal feels 100% normal no braking applied to vehicle. Had to basically put all my 140kg frame into the pedal to get the slightest braking effect on car. Came to a stop about 100m down the road. Probably would've killed someone in the city.

Got it home. Did a bleed as per 'by the letter' instructions, thing came good, brakes back to 100% fine.

So I'm thinking contaminated fluid? Planned on replacing fluid and seeing how it goes.

24 hours later, start it up to shift it and the abs pump isn't working correctly. It's flicking on & off for half a sec repeatedly when i fire car up. No brakes but pedal seems normal. Fluid level is fine.

Now before i go out and fork out a grand ($1400 through LR dealer) to replace the whole pump assembly, I'd like to actually understand the system better.

It's a strange sequence of events, could it be electrical, or a clogged reservoir? What would make the pump behave like this?

Any idea's appreciated.

I'm not convinced one can def destinguish between a dud pump and a dud accumulator, UNLESS one knows one or the other for sure is OK!

A few weeks down the track with a known good pump and, yes, I can now detect that the accumulator is not in optimal condition:

* it takes 60 seconds on 1st start-up to pressurise
* a REALLY hard push on the pedal while driving fires up the pump for 1-2 seconds.

It probably was the cause on my pump's demise although the death sentence was handed down by a dud Hella relay.

Don't believe Rover's decree that pumps are not repairable. I reckon it's fear of litigation that makes them say that. It's just an electric pump with an eccentric rotor to pressurise the fluid FFS!

They ARE repairable, you just have to put up with the "service" provided by UPS.
